WD My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 and NV+ v2
I naively bought a WD My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible) for use as a backup drive for my NV+ v2 (with 3 x 3TB WD drives inside), having used a number of different USB 2.0 drives in the past successfully (2 x Samsung 1.5TB Story Stations, Buffalo 2.0 TB Just Store Desktop). Unfortunately the NV+ refuses to recognise the WD drive, either in the USB 3.0 ports or the front USB 2.0 port. The WD is formatted as NTFS, as were the other drives I have used.
I am currently using the WD drive as a backup via my iMac (connected using Gigabit Ethernet to the NAS), but it would be more convenient to use it directly with the NAS.
Has anyone successfully used this mainstream drive with an NV+ v2? Has anyone got any suggestions?

Hmm, thing is I might still be able to return the my book and get myself a hdd with a usb 3 enclosure e.g. Icybox IB-366StU3-B External Enclosure for 3.5-inch SATA USB 3.0, with a WD Green/RED drive depending on price. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou could try reformatting it as 2 NTFS partitions (using MBR, not GPT) and see if that works.

that would be a problem, the drive is nearly full, I don't have a spare drive. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI am confused - where would you put the data if you returned it?

I would buy another drive and enclosure first :) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIs your goal to
(a) copy files from the mybook to the NAS
(b) backup the NAS to the mybook
(c) something else? - ZaimAspirant

Its got media files on it. Just a separate drive with different data on it. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOk. So the goal is to extend the storage capacity for the NAS? (sharing the external drive?)

Basically yeah, the idea was to be able to have access to the drive for media streaming and being able to copy files to it and remove when needed. I could just hook it up to my Sony Blu-ray player via USB but it won't show up on the network. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserMy recollection is that the v2 doesn't handle GPT-formatted USB drives. If that is the case, reformatting it into 2 partitions would be the only option. Though that is an annoying restriction, since the unit does understand GPT for internal drives.
Alternatively, you could share it with another device (a PC for instance, or a maybe router that has USB drive support).
