If you aren't intending to replace the disk, then you should always do this with the NAS powered down.  Keep it powered down until after you reinsert the disk.  Also, it is good to label the disks by slot, so you can maintain the order.

Your NAS doesn't check for that.  It assumed that you were adding a new drive to the array.

Normally it will format the newly inserted disk, and then reconstruct it's contents from the remaining three disks.

In your case that went wrong.  Drive 4 failed during the process, so the NAS couldn't reconstruct the data on drive 1.

If you have no backup, then you will need to try RAID recovery.  That might not succeed, and it can be expensive.

There are other reputable companies that also offer this, though you do need to be careful.

You could also try connecting the disks to a PC (SATA or with a USB adapter/dock), and try RAID recovery software.  R-Studio is a relatively inexpensive option ( https://www.r-studio.com/ ).  If that doesn't seem to find your files, you could also try ReclaiMe ( https://www.reclaime.com/ ). Both will let you install the software for free, so you can see if it can recover anything.  But you do need to purchase before you restore the files.
