What next
Hi on my thread below I posted I was upgrading to a duo v2 , but didn't realise it was redundant.
Looked at 102 , 104 ,and pro can someone offer a suggestion as to what to get . It's for home media use photos music movies etc. 0nly 100gb at the minute but want to future proof . And may use as a work server in the future.
What's the advantages of the upgraded system.
I also have posted my 2x2tb won't work from the duo, is this even with a reformat . I also still have the 500 gob drives the duo shipped with could i use them in the 104 so it would be 2tbx2tbx.5tbx.5tb?
Cheers

- (a) All three NAS are much faster than your duo v1
(b) The Pro is now considered legacy. However, a new purchase would still have a 5 year warranty. The Pro's web UI is very similar to the duo v1 (though you cannot migrate your existing disks to it). The Pro has a higher performance CPU than the RN102/RN104.
(c) The RN102/RN104 both use the new OS6 firmware. They are fast more than fast enough for media streaming, but they are not capable of on-the-fly media transcoding. Though your duo v1 isn't capable of that either. The RN102/RN104 would have a 3 year warranty (the RN3xx and RN5xx have a 5 year, but are more expensive).
OS6 has some benefits - ReadyCloud and more useful snapshots are (in my opinion) the most useful. And it is more "future proof" than the pro would be, since the pro is already in the legacy category for Netgear.
On the other hand, the pro's administration and features will be more familiar to you, it has a longer warranty, and is a faster NAS than the RN1xx line. If you want higher performance, longer warranty and OS6, get an RN3xx or RN5xx.
BTW, it is possible to run OS6 on a pro, but that is not supported by Netgear,
On your final question - you could reuse the 500 GB drives, but if you are using the default XRAID2 raid mode, you would need to install the 500 GB drives first. That's the case with both the RN104 and a pro-4. - ClarksonAspirantCheers for help. What about the nv units?
I also want to run the security apps and photos 2 is it x86 I need for this
Cheers
John - The NV units are all legacy, and I wouldn't recommend them for you. The v1 is the same architecture you have now, and is much slower than newer products (and is limited to 2 TB drives). The v2 was replaced by OS6 before the v2 firmware was fully mature, so you would be better off with an RN1xx.
Readynas Surveillance and Photos 2 can both be installed on the RN102/RN104. Piwigo (for photos) is also available, and may be a better choice. In my opinion Netgear support for Surveillance and Photos has been very weak. - xeltrosApprenticeIF you wanna go with a readynas as a server for work, I'd clearly look at an intel version. You would have more server software since most servers are intel based (Xeon), I believe virtual box is possible to install (please check this before buying), you'll get a faster CPU and more RAM.
The 102/104 is a pure NAS, it has no video out, so you can access it only by network (web interface, sharing protocols, SSH). Fine for video streaming but don't expect to plug it to the TV. If you have some transcode to do, the 1.2Ghz CPU may be a little short sometimes.
I personnaly have a 104, it shows 90-100Mbytes/s in read and 30-40Mbytes/s in write for large files. - ClarksonAspirantHi
Thanks I think for my budget a 102 will do for now.
I take the point about server but this is a secondary application . Mainly a media server
John - The RN102 will outperform your current duo v1, so if the performance of the duo is acceptable you will be fine.
- ClarksonAspirantHi
Had a rethink and the margin between 102 and 312 is a lot smaller than I thought . Around a 100 if you shop about.
So think it's the answer better performance and all new set up . Also Intel so if I do set up a network at the office better set up.
Thank you for your help
