Which 3TB HD for Pro Pioneer

Hi,

I am still pondering if/when to upgrade the 6 HDs in my Pro Pioneer, and I checked out the HCL, and there are only a handful of approved 3TB HDs.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723030ALA640
Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 HUA723030ALA640
Seagate Constellation ST33000650NS
Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRS
Seagate Barracuda XT ST33000651AS
Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3030ALA630

Here in Denmark, or even getting the HDs from Germany, the Ultrastar is simply too expensive, and I am not a fan of Seagate. I do have 2 of the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000s in my Ultra2, but which ones are everyone else using in their Pro 6s/Pro Pioneers?

  • Can't speak directly to the Pro BE/Pioneer/6, but I have two of the Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 in use in two NVX units since last June and they have performed well for me. I was expanding from 4 x Seagate ST1000528AS drives in each unit resulting in a mix of two 5400RPM and two 7200RPM drives. I was planning to replace all 8 of the drives, but the price spike hit before I did so and decided to wait. They have come down some but since I am only at 48% of my available volume, I will wait a bit more.
  • Will e 5'400 RPM driver not be slower than my Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives, I am using rit now?

  • A slight bit slower. But unless you are doing something that is really disk intensive and large, you probably wouldn't notice it. I have heard it reported that the 5400RPM drives are about 10% slower than the 7200. When I ran Bonnie on my NVX before and after switching two of my drives to the 5400RPM, the rating went from 110 to 108. That is internal as the throughput to the network is limited by the 32bit processor and generally peaks around 75MB/s. My resync times on disk scrubbing went from 8 hours to 10, but the volume also went from 2.7TB to 4.5TB.

Looking at Newegg, the only 3TB drives on the HCL that they have in stock are the HDS5C3030ALA630 and the WD30EZRS. Amazon does show the HDS723030ALA640 Retail kit 0S03086 for $279 (they are showing 8). The HDS5C3030ALA630 Retail kit 0S03228 is shown on Newegg for $218 (with shipping). They have the WD30EZRS for $257 while Amazon wants $388 and only has 4.
  • I'm in Denmark, so availability is a whole other story. I can get the Hitachi Deskstar, but also the other ones on the list, but the Deskstars are cheaper, and the Ultrastars are very expensive.

    Other opinions?

  • Each location has different availability, but stick to the ones on the HCL. While you may be able to use drives that are not on the list, you may also encounter problems. The Deskstar drives are consumer grade drives with a 3 year and Ultrastar drives are enterprise class drives with a 5 year warranty and should all have Rotational Vibration Safeguard. This is necessary in arrays with a large number of drives thus makes a difference in 12 bay units. In use in 4 or 6 bay units the enterprise class drives may or many not last longer. At least they have the longer warranty.
