Which 6 disk unit 316 or 516?
After close to 5 years on the NV+ it is time for a replacement.
I have sort of settled on a 6 disk unit to replace it.
More space and potential for fault tolerance.
The current usage of the NV+ is a home NAS running Squeezebox server and hosting my music collection.
It also serves as a repository for backups of raw video files and photos ( all backed up separately ).
As I am getting more into production of digital video and potentially using the surveillance video server I want more volume capacity.
I am not a big believer in using 3-4tb drives in the nas setting, yet. So getting 5-10tb in a 6 drive system seems to be the sweet spot for me.
When looking at the 316 vs the 516, it looks like the processor and higher memory capacity are the real differences.
So what am I getting otherwise for the 3-500 difference in price.
The OS ( I am waiting for the 6.1.5 release before I buy ) is the same, the apps available are the same.
Is the performance increase that substantial?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserCopy performance of the RN3xx is about 100 mbyte per second with raid 5 (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... l=&start=1)
The RN516 is definitely better if you are needing on-the-fly video transcoding (for instance with plex). That is more about CPU performance than file I/O.
Personally I would go with fewer 3 TB drives (or possibly 4 TB), and leave at least one slot open for future expansion. Expanding into empty slots is more cost-effective than upgrading smaller drives with larger ones.
