Why link to a 404 page?

I just got this email:

A newer version of the firmware for your ReadyNAS device is now available. To install it, please go to the System page and click on the Update tab. Then, go to the Remote tab, click the Check For Update button, then click Perform System Update.

Name: RAIDiator
Version: 4.1.12
Date: Mon Jul 1 21:33:47 2013
Size: 63070720
Description: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_12_Notes

However, the "Description" link you sent me takes me to a page that doesn't exist. Why did you do that?

  • The main site seems to have been ignored while the links from systems and webpages still point there, when in fact they ought to point to the kb.netgear.com set of links. Cleanup required!
  • Hi,

This was obviously never checked or tested. No obvious beta testing and apparently not even alpha tested. :( What other bugs lurk within the actual firmware?

I am not changing the firmware on my unit for a while yet. The data is too important to rely on apparently untested firmware.

    Regards,
    Ian.

There was a public beta for 4.1.11. 4.1.12 doesn't have many more changes. The changes from 4.1.11 to 4.1.12 would be similar to the changes from 4.2.23 to 4.2.24 (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=71841)

During beta testing you would see a link to release notes that are not yet published as the firmware is beta not production yet. As part of the release process, the Release Notes for the production firmware would be written and then published.

Recently NetGear has started publishing Release Notes on the NetGear KB site. So what is needed is for http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_12_Notes to redirect to the Release Notes page.
  • I've had my ReadyNAS nv+ v2 for about a year and didn't have any reason to do much forum-trawling. But since running into a 4 disk partition corruption that almost lost my /dev/md2 'fake raid', I've been lurking here quite a bit. Example: look at the Backup section of the forum and check the links to "What is ReadyNAS Vault" and "Easy Time Machine Setup with the ReadyNAS" - both are 404s. It doesn't inspire confidence.

As those links refer to instructions for EOL products those pages were removed. You can still find most important pages on kb.netgear.com using a Google search.
