Do nas's supporting replicate come with licence?Pricing?
I started looking ahead to see but the page for replicate doesn't specify other than "one-time licensed product" though no details on if it comes with the device if I am the first user or what prices I should be expecting on purchasing a license. When I do get supported nas's at this point they are for home use ( backup to family nas in another area)
I see there's a forum for "replicate home beta" , but its kinda dead (More views than responses) and there is no indication of pricing for that and more than replicate.
I'm planning on buying at least readynas ultra pro 4(future-proofing my 2disk) for me and ultra pro 2 for backup or less but comparative for my backup location( the member where I'd replicate to probably won't use it and be more of a blue nightlight if it compares to the led's on my duov1  ).
Thanks for the help

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFor the ReadyNAS you need to purchase one license per device.
You would need the Replicate Desktop license.
The home license is for the Duo/NV+ v2.
Pricing would be available from a reseller that sells Replicate licenses. mdgm wrote: For the ReadyNAS you need to purchase one license per device.

Well at least for now that's only for arm anyway but I hoped depending on my need I could get either license. That home license seems to limit to 2 drive devices for that [though still an ultra quiet forum so far].mdgm wrote:

You'd think that was the case but I check my primary site on newegg for "replicate" and "readynas replicate" and got nothing. The closest price I found was 200+ and it was from a site I've never dealt with. I checked a good handful of those site listed from my area and it seemed that nothing popped up.
Any idea if the 200 price tag is overpriced and whats the difference other that hopefully price?- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe NV+ v2 (ARM) is a 4-bay device.
The RN00RPL1 would be for the desktop x86 units.
The RN00RPL2 would be for the rackmount x86 units.
You can search around for a good price. There is a free trial you can use before purchasing Replicate. With the ReadyNAS Pro Series you can use the free alternative Rsync over SSH - Rsync looks more like a local backup option. maybe Netgear will have a Black Friday deal this year ( I haven't gotten a pro advertisement in a while). Now I gotta go check the nv+v2 4 disk details.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Replicate for Home would have a different product number.
Rsync is actually designed for backups over the internet. There's an old PDF (Using Rsync for NAS-to-NAS Backups). Replicate uses Rsync and does backups over the same VPN used by ReadyNAS Remote. Rsync by itself is not secure so Rsync over VPN or Rsync over SSH are recommended options. Replicate does provide some good advantages over just using Rsync such as multiple versions of files etc. - Just checking, once I set this up it would use readynas remote likeness and the ip is just for setup of sync. If thats not the case its missing some steps to push over the internet.
The pdf I'll read tommorrow but it check list mentions setting up a vpn connection . Does the" rsync over ssh" do that built in? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo. What I'm saying is that ReadyNAS Remote and Replicate are software that use the same NetGear Virtual Private Network. This software provides a secure connection between two devices. In the case of Replicate it's between two ReadyNAS units.
If you want to use Rsync not Replicate then you'll need to use your own VPN or use a different alternative Rsync over SSH (available on the ReadyNAS Pro Series). Rsync over SSH involves having a SSH key on a ReadyNAS and another ReadyNAS or different device with Rsync. This key enables a secure connection to be made without needing to setup a hardware VPN or software VPN. With Rsync over SSH you'd need to port forward port 22. If you were to enable SSH for other tasks via EnableRootSSH you'd need to be very careful to secure SSH properly to avoid a security risk.
An advantage of Replicate is that it automates a lot of tasks relating to backup like keeping versions of files, backing up a snapshot of your data etc. - O.k thanks for the clear up. For simplicity I'll probably end up with home replicate though try rsync with ssh.
I do hope, though I haven't seen site of it, that there is an upgrade path if I go to a pro version of replicate in the future. I think the license is tied to my account so it won't be a positive on resale.
Anything else I should know about home vs pro licence or do they do everything except ones intended for office and ones for home?
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredRsync over SSH is available on the ReadyNAS Pro Series not the cheaper models.

I was kind of expecting the opposite . Either way has its own price vs simplicity.
Thanks for the heads up
