Egnyte Local Cloud Stratergy

Hello all,

Our small business is looking at implementing Egnyte and the Office Local cloud on a ReadyNAS pro. Im wondering if anyone can share some suggestions or experience in how best to tackle the usage case below.

We have two offices and a few roaming users / work from home.

The main issue is at both offices we have more 'data' then we could ever really sync over the relatively slow upload broadband at both sites.

So i would like all of the features and benefits of having Egnyte sync files for the roaming users, and move our local data up into the cloud file server.. but..

Is there a way we can have 4TB of data on our local clouds, and only "sync" the most recently used or most recent 1TB? We could manage this by having folders for 'in-progress' work and 'archived'

Also lots of the data at once site is irrelevant to users at the other site, so ideally we don't want to sync this. Again we could separate by folders.

Ideally the killer feature here would be for Egnyte to be able to sync only the most recent "500GB" or something, but keep a File and folder list of all the data in sync. If a user requests access for an 'old' or archived file, Egnyte will go down to the NAS as long as its online and upload this file to the user.

So in short a problem is we have to much data for our poor broadband services to just "sync everything" Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

  • Hi martyp187,

Here are my 2 suggestions, if any other Egnyte customers want to chime in, that would be great :)

    1. Have the local data stored on the ReadyNAS pro devices. Then move the "newer" data that you wish to be shared with roaming users and both offices on your Egnyte account. The 500GB would be migrated to the "Shared" folder in the Egnyte account so that everyone has access, and all creates/edits/saves would be automatically synced in that folder. Here's an article on how to sync your existing data to the ReadyNAS. The problem with this approach is that "If a user requests access for an 'old' or archived file, Egnyte will go down to the NAS as long as its online and upload this file to the user" is not possible because the archived files aren't synced to the cloud, if this is crucial then keep reading.

    2. Same thing as on top, except just migrate all of the data (new and old) to the Egnyte account. Create sub-folders in the "Shared" folder such as Office 1 archived, Office 2 archived, In progress... etc. This way all your employees have access to the recent 500GB files as well as the 4TB of archived files if needed. To migrate 4TB of data to the cloud, I would suggest you use our data migration service (shipping over hard drive and we directly sync for you). This service does cost extra, but I think it's worth not having to upload that data yourself. Here's an article about our data migration service (see option 2).

Let me know if you have any further questions, I'd be happy to help.
