how to ssh non-root?

So if I understand correctly, I will have to void my warranty by installing EnableRootSSH, in order to fix /etc/passwd to be able to ssh more safely. Still not a bad idea to SSH non-root as much as I possibly can, but I do want to understand what exactly do I void with the warranty? I take personal responsibility for screwing up my linux config and having to re-factory it, but will the hardware warranty still be valid after messing with root?
Sounds like the toggler is still a good thing to use to disable SSH when I am not doing any work on it, just to be safe. I'm behind a firewall anyway.
