Initialization failed - error code -3
I can't get the ReadyNAS Remote to work on Windows 7 Enterprise Ed x64 (it worked perfectly on another XP x86 machine of mine).
The suggestion to load Leaf ontop on Remote I found on this thread...
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=31765
... does not work for me.
Seems like a driver is still failing to start, this error is seen in the System Log on each start attempt of Remote...
The FwHookDrv service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
... shortly before each error, this success event is logged:
A service was installed in the system.
Service Name: FwHookDrv
Service File Name: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\FwHookDrv.sys
Service Type: kernel mode driver
Service Start Type: demand start
Service Account:
Any suggestions?

- dood1AspirantI have also tried to install ReadyNAS Remote and get the error code-3 on Windows 7 Professional. When I tried the install on an old Windows XP machine the ReadyNAS Remote installed and functioned. Seems like the Remote and Windows 7 do not play well together. Hope there is a patch or update soon.
Dood - flyvertAspirantWhat kind of of forum is this? I'm a bit dissapointed that "trivial questions" like this one remain unanswered for weeks... :-(
Surely, I can't be the only one having issues with getting Remote to run on Windows 7 x64???
Anyway, I might jump Remote since it seemed to disturb my disk's sleeping (another unanswered thread on this "support forum").

Let's try to do this:
Find in system register,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters
and
1) increase current value for 1
2) reinstall ReadyNasRemote client. - mnanettiAspirantI just got a new Duo v2 ARM-based.
I decided to install Remote client on my office desktop, that is XP Professional SP3 32-bit based.
The installation works fine, but the application closes with "Initialization Failed. - error code: -3".
It's a bit embarassing, especially because I can't get any additional information.
What this code's meaning ? How can I troubleshoot it ? How can I get out of this mud ? - simeonAspirantHi guys
This worked for me, so I thought I would share. Thanks maxkomlev! But, I also did one more thing. I have 64 bit Win 7. The program was looking for fwleaf.sys when it installed and I had pointed it to the location: "C:\Program Files (x86)\NETGEAR ReadyNAS\Remote\adapter". After installation, I got the Error 3 message. Then I realised there was a subfolder "x64" in this folder with another version of fwleaf.sys. I selected this one after doing the register change below and the install worked. Hope it helps some others.

I was having the same issue on Windows 8.1 - I has tried installing as an administrator and it didn't work, also tried running the program as an administrator it didn't work.
In the end the fix that worked for me was to copy the file FwHookDrv.sys into C:\Windows\System32\drivers and this worked. This file was missing (don't know why the setup program didn't copy it) and it was preventing a service from starting.
Hope this helps! - Retired_Member

Thanks, I've been struggling with this for months, this is indeed the issue.
This file is not getting installed for some reason, I hope someone from Netgear reads this, or this thread gets made a sticky.
If your unsure how to make this fix, you'll need 7zip or a similar program to open up the the ReadyNAS remote install file. Once open navigate to $SYSDIR and then open the drivers folder. You'll find FwHookDrv.sys in here. Copy it and move it to c:\windows\system32\drivers. Thats it, fixed! - cps1AspirantAbout readynas remote error 3 in Windows 8. It would not install the software and I always got an error 3 when every I asked to open the readynas remote application.
I have windows 8.1 Pro on this computer and was unable to install readynas remote in windows 8, was asking for a file that I suppose was on a CD of which it was not. The logic letter it was asking for was for the CD/DVD unit. I then looked at the details on this file it was asking for from a CD/DVD unit, changed the logic letter from E: to C: it installed the readynas remote software and all is working fine.
