mySQL questions for XBMC database

Hi,

I'm running a readynas NV+ and a Pro pioneer which serve as storage for acer 1600 HTPC's which act as media streamers using XBMC. I'm trying to syncronize my XBMC database so that I can watch things in one room and finish them in another as described in this lifehacker article

http://lifehacker.com/5634515/how-to-synchronize-your-xbmc-media-center-across-every-room-in-the-house?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+lifehacker/full+(Lifehacker)&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

Unfortunately, I have no experience with mySQL. From doing some searching it looks like I can use the php to start enable mySQL is there anything special I need to do to get the database set up? Has anybody here done this?

Thanks
Paul

  • This may help - not a tutorial as such, but shows what you need to get PHP & MySQL up and running
  • Thanks. I was hoping for something a little more explicit. with so many xbmc/readynas users I'm surprised someone hasn't gotten this up and running

You need to enable PHP, get the MYSQLON addon and phpmyadmin addon

That is what I have got set up and it works fine. All info I used was in this thread

  • Hey guys, I've been trying to setup mysql for xbmc on my readynas but keep getting this error:
    14:26:25 T:3236 M:1768726528 ERROR: Unable to open database: xbmc_video [2003](Can't connect to MySQL server on '192.168.10.25' (10061))
14:26:25 T:3236 M:1768726528 ERROR: Unable to open database at host: 192.168.10.25 db: xbmc_video (old version?)

when I look at the privileges of the xbmc user I see:
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'xbmc'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD

any idea's what I'm missing here? Is there a way I can check the mysql connection from my pc?
  • Probably the mysql config is restricted to not accept network connections - by default it will only accept connections from applications running on the same server.

You'll have to update the mysql config and restart the server

    thanx sphardy,

I commented out the line in my.cnf: "skip-networking" (/etc/mysql/my.cnf) and restarted the nas. Now XBMC starts nicely. Time to rebuild my library :D

I already changed the bind-address=127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0 but it was also commented out now... perhaps after the package update.

Anyhow, it works! thanks a million
  • Hey RezzZ, I'm looking at doing the same thing on my systems. I'm curious how you handled file access between your different systems. Do you just ensure the ReadyNAS mappings to shares are on the same drive letter on each computer, or are you referencing everything by server/share name? I've only run Boxee in the past (which doesn't support a centralized database), but think I'll switch to XMBC to make use of it... I'd rather not have to deal with file rescans from each computer independently.
