314 - Shares and shortcuts on (linux) PC
Hi,
Ubuntu
NASUltra, NASPro, NAS314 6.2.4
With my Ultra and Pro, I could create shortcuts in my PC Home folder to Shares on the NAS'.
Please bear with me as I outline the procedure I used:
1. Create the share on the NAS, say 'financial'
2. Create the mount point on the PC:
sudo mkdir /mnt/naspro_financial
3. Change ownership:
sudo chown -R david:david /mnt/naspro_financial
4. Change access permissions:
sudo chmod -R 755 /mnt/naspro_financial
5. Make a shortcut in my Home folder:
ln -s /mnt/naspro_financial /home/david/
6. Change fstab:
<ip of nas>:/c/financial /mnt/naspro_financial nfs nfsvers=3,rsize=65536,wsize=65536,tcp,noatime,intr
Great - shortcuts that make using, creating and deleting files on the NAS extremely easy.
On my 314 I can do the same procedure with shares I create. I created a user 'david' and on the shares set File Access>Folder Owner: david and Folder Group: users.
fstab has the only change: the fstab entries for the 31400 are .../data/... instead of .../c/... e.g.:
192.168.1.7:/data/financial /mnt/314_financial nfs nfsvers=3,rsize=65536,wsize=65536,tcp,noatime,intr
But this doesn't work for the default shares, e.g. Documents, Video etc. even if I change the File Access settings. I get Permission denied when trying to mount them (and the just don't mount during the boot process).
My question is, how can I create shortcuts in my PC Home folder for the NAS314 default shares?
Many thanks for your help.
David
Just deleting the shares/recreating them should work. Any snapshots should be deleted with the share.

One simple answer is to delete them and recreate them.
You could also try changing their owner/group. Not sure if this is relevant - but "guest/guest" (and nobody/nobody) on the RN314 have different UID/GIDs from the pro's nobody/nobody. The RN314 uses 99, the pro uses 65534.
The default shares do seem to have some different attributes (if you use ssh, and do a getfacl on them you will see acl entries that don't exist for the shares you create). So you could also attempt to match their acl with financial, and see if that resolves it.

Thanks StephenB.
My apologies for neglecting to give you the credit for the change from .../c/... to .../data/...
Yes, I had to use ssh and change the 'david' UUID on my Ultra (and Pro? from memory) to 1000 to match my UUID on Ubuntu.
I tried changing user/group before I posted but no combination worked.
I think, as you say, deleting the default shares and creating new shares is the easiest. I didn't want to ssh into the box becsause of the warranty ... I don't know how strict Netgear is. On my Ultra and Pro (which is still under warranty) I do it quite happily.
Is there a Rubbish Bin we need to worry about?
Many thanks - I appreciate your help.
