4.1.7 Slow To Respond To SMB Network Discovery...
Hi,
Since upgrading my DUO to 4.1.7 I have noticed that the DUO is *very* slow to respond SMB/SAMBA network share enumeration requests. It may take up to about a minute for the DUO to provide its list of shares. The problem happens *every* time the DUO is asked to list its shares and not just for the first request. This was not an issue under 4.1.6. (I never ran any of the betas and upgraded from 4.1.6 production directly to 4.1.7 production. There were no obvious issues with the upgrade.)
On a client PC this results in about a minute of waiting before the DUO responds with a share list. This is long but not particularly problematic. On the other hand, to my media players this response is *so* long that the media player times out and is no longer able to find the DUO. This is *very* problematic.
This is only happening on my DUO with 4.1.7. The same DUO with 4.1.6 was fine and my NVX with 4.2.15 is also fine.
Is it possible to get a patch to repair this issue? Is there anything I can do to restore the previously snappy performance? Is it safe/possible to revert to 4.1.6?
Regards,
Ian.

- IanSavApprenticeHi Kaboom,
Have you tried the new 4.1.8 beta? This has fixed this issue for WSJ and me.

Yes, I can confirm this. It's better to apply the beta than to revert to 4.1.6.
Regards, Wolfgang - IanSavApprenticeHi,
Sorry, I forgot to mention Jeunliro, who also mentioned that these betas have addressed the issue for them as well.
Regards,
Ian. - BadBradAspirantThis is very promising.
Does anyone have an approximate ETA as to when the 4.1.8 final will be available?
Also does anyone know if we will be able to upgrade from 4.1.6 straight to 4.1.8? I never did the 4.1.7 upgrade
One last question:
With version 4.1.6 I have had a problem when I use a scheduled power up. More often than not, I do not seem to get an IP address from the DHCP server on my netgear router when the unit performs its scheduled power up in the morning as it is power on but not accessible on the network. Other devices on the network do not have this problem. Please note that I always power up with a seagate exernal usb hard drive (formatted as ext 3) plugged into the duo. I have noticed that if I power down the system and immediately power it back up just after the external drive is shutdown, it usually comes back fine. Anyone know if this is a known problem that is fixed with 4.1.8? I also note that I have my router is reserving 192.168.1.3 for the duo, so it will always get 192.168.1.3 when DHCP is used.

Big thanks to everyone for the input. I am glad to see that this is worked on and is apparently resolved.
Since I am not good at fixing *nix problems, I am a bit weary of performing an upgrade to a beta. I have a backup of my RAID but what I do not have is time to deal with eventual problems and having to restore to factory defaults should something is to happen. I know chances are slim and yet... I hope that the next stabile version is going to be out soon. Luckily our ReadyNAS do not have to be rebooted often and there is a workaround that needs to be applied only once per reboot. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

I see no reason why not. You should be able to upgrade straight from much older firmware than that too. - BadBradAspirant
wsj: 4.1.8 (final, not the beta) is now available !!!
Thanks for the note. I noticed 4.1.8 was available a couple days after release. Did the upgrade, then. No problems. Again thanks. - WSJTutor

I'm glad to hear that. So this should encourage all the others to upgrade to 4.1.8, as well.
