Specifically via SMB I see a share for /data - the root of all shares and for /home the root of all home folders, even though neither of these are listed in FrontView -> Shares.
Why is this? How can I control the shares that user admin can see via SMB?
This is because you are accessing the NAS using it's admin credentials (and it is by design).
The only way to change it is to use different credentials when you access via SMB.

Thanks StephenB - appreciated.
Where can I read more about the default behaviour of the user admin?
Suggestion: Would it be useful for these shares to be visible in FrontView? (even if not editable)

There's not a lot written about "admin" in the documentation. As far as SMB access goes, the only real difference is that admin can see the data volume (and home).

This article was recommended by StephenB via PM - its one of the best things I've read about ReadyNAS Security and Permissions. Stephen tells me although this is written for OS 4 it still applies to OS 6. http://readynas.sphardy.com/2010/10/overview-of-readynas-permissions_1643.html
IMHO this should be in the FAQ!
