Alerts Fail to Send (repeatable error - bug)

Email alerts on my RN 314 have been working just fine since I got it three years ago. The email is a GMAIL account with two-factor authentication and I just use a Google generated applicaiton specific password.

For the record, RN 314, 4 2TB Reds, OS 6.6.0

About two weeks ago they stopped working. Figuring the issue was with the password I created a new one but that failed when I tried to send a test message.

Searching the forum and finding the suggestion to NOT use two-factor authentication and not wanting to disable two-factor authentication on my GMAIL account I resurected an old GMAIL address and entered that one in the Alerts section of the Settings tab having deleted the first one.Tested it twice, worked fine.

Went to bed and in the morning looked at my email for completion emails for my scheduled backups. None there.

Back to the Settings tab and everything looked fine but the test message failed.

Re-entered the password, test messages (tried 3) went through fine. Closed the browser and reopened it, logged into the NAS, went to settings and tested the alert email. Failed.

If I re-enter the password, send a test message or two with success, and then either close the browser or switch to another tab in the NAS web interface when I return to the Settings tab and send a test alert message it will fail. The error is absolutely repeatable.

Here is the error:

Unable to send a test message

Cannot send a test message, Check Settings

Code: 5008010000

msmtp: authentication method LOGIN needs a password msmtp:

could not sent mail (account default from /etc/msmtprc)

Thanks

  • I am delighted to report that this issue is fixed with OS 6.7.1!

After the update I tried to send a test message with the old settings (email address and password) and it failed. Reentering the password resulted in a successful test message and messages the past two days about backups completing, UPS issues (storms here), and a scheduled event (scrob) that started and completed.

    Tx!

Rather odd, I am getting alerts with no problem from my OS 6 systems (also using gmail).  Those are OS 6.6.1 beta, but there isn't anything listed related to email in the changelogs.

Did you enable "Access for less secure appsin the gmail security profile?

You could also try re-entering the mail password on the NAS, and then don't send the test message.  Instead try installing an app (which will also send an alert).  You can of course uninstall the app afterwards.   There were some bugs in the web ui related to the mail password being cleared sometimes; I'm not sure if they were fixed.

I'm having this same exact error on my legacy Ultra 6 Plus running OS 6.6.1.  Using either Gmail or Hotmail, my test messages initially go through.  However, after logging out of the admin panel and logging back in, any attempt to send a test messages fails with the same error message:

msmtp: authentication method LOGIN needs a password msmtp:

could not sent mail (account default from /etc/msmtprc)

Re-enter the password and the test message sends successfully.

Maybe OS 6.7.1 will fix the problem when it comes out.  In the interim, any suggestions?  I'm striking out with my search of the internet.

And yes, I have "Access for less secure app" enabled.

      Thanks in advance.

Is this only test messages?  There have been similar bugs on them before.

Try something that generates a real message, and see if that works.  A balance will do it.  You can also create a back job configured to fail - that will also send an email.
