I believe that "auto" waits for a critical signal from the APC (so the UPS is determining the threshold). It is possible that the NAS is not understanding that particular message, it is also possible that the UPS would have sent it if you had waited just a bit longer. However, 8 minutes left feels a little close to me.
So you could try the auto again, and skate a little closer to power down this time. Maybe take it down to 3 minutes.
Or you could set the NAS to a suitable threshold. I think that is what I would do.
