Backing up with Time Machine crashes the ReadyNAS NV+

Hi there, I recently installed an NV+ with 2x 2TB HDD's in X-Raid. The Firmware version is 4.1.8, the iMac's OS is OSX Lion.

So I've been able to migrate my iTunes library successfully to the NAS using the AFP share. Accessing these shares works perfectly.
I started a time machine backup this morning (600GB or so) and after a while, the iMac reports that the volume has been ejected or is no longer available. The AFP shares are all gone, FrontView is no longer accessible and I need to power down the NAS and then power it back on again to regain access.

What should I do to resolve this issue?

  • I'm doing the backup over Ethernet. I read somewhere that enabling jumbo frames may help. I've enabled this and so far it hasn't crashed after uploading about 10GB of data.

I haven't actually downloaded any of the Beta firmwares, would that particular firmware version have an update related to this issue? It only mentions performance using AFP.

The same service is used for both AFP and Time Machine. Time Machine backups over a network are done over AFP (Apple Filing Protocol).

What did you enable Jumbo Frames on? For it to have an effect it needs to be enabled on the NAS, the iMac (don't know if your iMac's ethernet NIC supports Jumbo Frames) and your router/switch.
  • Hi mdgm, I enabled jumbo frames on the NAS under Network -> Interfaces -> Performance settings. I've just updated the firmware to 4.1.9 T6 and around 416Kb into the backup, the NAS shares all disappeared and I could no longer access Frontview via the browser. I had to manually shut it down and then turn it back on again.

I have logs from before I did the update and straight after I did the update. Will that help?
  • There doesn't seem to be an attach button / section in PM. If you want me to copy and paste from a particular log, can you please let mek now which one?
  • Still no luck. Looks like the Eth0 interface completely dies exactly when time machine stops. I've sent my logs to the Netgear support team. If it doesn't get resolved I think I'll have to return it :(
It's such a shame to do that though...
