Backup doesn't complete

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra-6. It is working perfectly and is really serving me well. BUT: I've just recently tried setting it to backup [I got another NAS _just_ to serve as a backup target for the ReadyNAS]. The new NAS [a smallish Iomega] seems to work fine, also. So I went and configured a simple backup on the ReadyNAS of the one share with active data on it to write to the new NAS. It started at 1AM and it is now nine hours later and it hasn't finished yet -- still "in progress". there aren't timestamps in the log, but from what I can tell it finished writing all the files to the other NAS hours and hours ago. And if I look at the backup NAS, a cursory scan seems to indicate that, indeed, the files are all there [about 65 gigs worth of stuff]. But still it is running and doing something. The backup NAS is still showing activity, but I can't guess what it is, the logs on the ReadyNAS don't give any indication as to what's going on.

How long should a smallish backup take? And what has it been doing for the last 8-or-so hours after it finished actually copying all the files over to the backup NAS? Thanks!

    What version of RAIDiator?

I suggest you contact NetGear tech support at my.netgear.com and post your case number.
  • OK, I'll submit a tech support ticket and see what they say . I have ticket # 19365822. I just figured that this might be a common/usual situation [as most of my travails are.. :o)] and so I tried asking here first... -- my Radiator version is RAIDiator 4.2.19

Could you stop the backup job, update to 4.2.21 then rerun the backup job and see if it works?

What protocol are you using for the backup?
  • I don't know about protocols: all I did was use the built-in backup on the Ready NAS from a local-share to a remote-NAS and gave it the login credentials for the share on the backup NAS. That "login" worked fine [and as I say, I can see all the files on the backup NAS: in fact, I was surprised that the backup doesn't seem to compress or batch the files at all, which is OK by me]. I'll try to update -- I've tried twice now and I can a "can't find that page" when I try to download the update... I'll try again...

    Sigh:

    I guess I'll keep trying...

You selected one when you chose the remote NAS.

    The choices are
      Windows/NAS (Timestamp)
      Windows (Archive bit)
      Website
      FTP Server
      NFS Server
      Rsync Server

    Which one did you make?
  • OK, three things: 1) I was doing a Windows/NAS (Timestamp). 2) I see in the log it did a cifs connect to the other NAS.

AND: *it*finished*! Updating the firmware did the trick. I'm a little surprised: I do have the box checked that it should check for updates [and i guess I assumed I'd get a notification email when a new update was available] but, as suggested, I cancelled the hung backup, did a remote-update, rebooted the REadyNAS and redid the backup and it finished. It took a bit over two hours. And I see why I was confused: the backup wasn't 65 gigs [as I had mentioned in my previous post] but 650 gigs and what had apparently happened is that the previous backup just hung/died. Seeing the size of the backup share, my head slipped a decimal point and I *thought* it had copied everything. So just another newbie tempest in a teapot.... thanks for the help!
