Backup NAS 102 via LAN Using USB on Netgear R7000 Router

Hello

I'm using a ReadyNAS 102 and I have a USB 3.0 WD Portable Hard Drive that I have used for backup from the front USB of the 102. It works fine but is a manual process. Across the house and on a different floor is my WiFi Netgear R7000 router. The NAS is acturaly wired to the switch of the R7000 via CAT5 cabling. The R7000 has a USB 3.0 port on the front of it.

Last night I plugged the WD USB HD into the R7000 and tried to define a backup of the ReadyNAS 102. The router is a standard 192.168.1.1 address. I am having trouble seeing the WD from the Network. The router has Genie software and the NAS has its on OS (not Genie). Can I do what I am attempting to do here? I am trying to avoid the option of buying a second ReadyNAS for remote backup. I'd like to think the router's attached storage can do this, but perhaps it cannot.

If it can be done please include how to define it in the ReadyNAS software. I already tried naming a folder and using the router IP Address. I even tried this information with and without the router password plugged into the backup. One possible point of error is that I only name the folder ("NAS Backup"), because I am not sure how to better define it. On a computer it would be C://NAS Backup or similar, but I am not sure what to call the router. I have some knowledge gaps here that could be the problem or this just can't be done.

The R7000 shares the drive using CIFS/SMB. So you need to choose the "windows" protocol option for the destination in the RN102 backup job. The default Router sharename is USB_Storage. So setting the host as 192.168.1.1 and the path as USB_Storage\NAS Backup ought to work.
  • Thanks so much StephenB. I will try the USB_Storage\NAS Backup tonight. That appears the be the nomenclature that I am missing.

I wish the world of Netgrear was a little more intuitive, but there is some small joy in tearing ones hair out for several nights until you get to the answer. It just wouldn't be as sweet if it were easy!
  • This path worked. I am now able to run a backup off the R7000 router via the USB drive. Thank you very much!
