Backup Target Size vs. Source

Hi, the system drive c: on my ReadyNas Pro holds 3.6 TB.  I tried to do a USB backup to a drive with 4.0 TB capacity.  The backup failed due to the target drive not having enough space.  How much overhead do I need on the target drive?  I formatted the target drive as FAT 32...  Thanks!

Thanks for that info.  I guess I under-sized the target drive.  Should have checked here first and saved myself 70 bucks..!  Is there anyway to span the backup across multiple external usb drives...?

No, but you can create backup jobs for different shares, which would let you do a subset of the files.

If you have a pc connected with ethernet, you could also use something like FreeFileSync to selectively back up files over the network (connecting the drive to the PC).

FWIW, NTFS is better.  FAT32 can't handle very large files.

Be careful here.  The NAS reports space in TiB (1024*1024*1024*1024 bytes).  3.6 TiB is the same as 3.96 TB, and of course the 3.6 is rounded.  Also, the file system overhead on the data volume will be different from the USB drive.  So it is quite possible that the USB drive isn't quite big enough.
