Semantic confusion between SOURCE and TARGET about RSYNC differential backup job…
Hello there,
Could someone tell me what should I trust?
Should I trust what's written in the ReadNAS Help section "Configure Advanced RSYNC Job Setting" about differential backup that says "Remove deleted files on SOURCE"
…or should I trust what's written on the actual advanced job interface that say "Remove deleted files on TARGET"
This is totally confusing and dangerous if the job actually removes from the source the files that have been deleted on the target. A differential backup usually removes the files from the target which have been deleted on the source (as explain in the help section)
I want to do a differential backup (removing files from the TARGET that have been deleted from the source) should I check the box or not?
I have that box checked on my own systems.
If checked, rsync will delete any files on the target that are no longer on the source.
If you are using OS 6.x on the target machine and have snapshots enabled, then you can restore those deleted files from the snapshot.
I agree the wording is confusing.

I thank you to confirm that what’s actually written in the ReadyNAS help is correct.
I didn’t dare to check the box before hearing from someone using that option.
