Backup to removable encrypted hard drive?
Hi,
Brief question: Are there any recommended external HDD encasements/docks that work well with ReadyNAS 516? I need simple operation, and capability to encrypt the drives.
Long version:
I have been using the ReadyNAS Pro Business for several years as our company file server. I have had 2 of them and used Rsync to mirror important data offsite between the 2 devices. This has worked well until recently. We have launched some large and quickly expanding databases (70G and growing). I think the next step would be to find a good external HDD dock which will allow me to copy data to an encrypted external hard drive to bring off site daily. Are there any such devices known to work well with ReadyNAS?
Currently, I back up the database locally on the server (backup1, backup2, backup3 and alternate), then Rsync to the backup files to the local ReadyNAS Pro over night. This works fine. But the next step is to start the mirror from one Readynas to the other over the WAN. We have 10mb up/down p2p connection, but the process never completes.
I just purchased a ReadyNAS 516 which will replace our current central Pro Business. That Pro business will go to a 3rd off-site office. I will continue to Rsync folder structures with smaller files as that has worked well so far. I just need to start backing up the 20G+ files to hard drive.

Depending how this works backing up to the NetGear EDA500 might be a good option though one would need to hear more about how this will work before one could be definite about that. Then you could perhaps power down the EDA500 and take it off-site.
As for external hard drive docks I'm not a fan of using those for "backup". It is not recommended to handle disks bare regularly as you can easily cause damage through electrostatic discharge without realising it or wear out SATA connectors through excessive pulls.
Welcome to the forum! - neclonAspirantGood points. Alternatively I could get 5 different external drive cases with eSATA & USB support. This would avoid the 'bare hard drive' handling. And cases are cheap, I suppose. The more I think about that, the better it sounds for reasons you've mentioned. Now, the question is - can ReadyNAS handle an encrypted external drive as a backup/restore destination?
The EDA500 isn't really what I'm looking for - I need to be able to take the drives off-site one at a time, and hot-swapping drives out of that device has the same drawbacks as a dock.
