Bad Drive?
Should I assume one of my drives is bad and no reparable if it's showed the drive was failing... so I removed it reinstalled it and it now reads "Newly added disk has failed SMART test. Please check disk 4."? I assume this means I should just replace the drive, but wanted to check if there's anything I should try to do to the drive first. Funny thing is, this is actually the newest drive in my NAS.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf the disk is failing the SMART test it is bad.
Disks can and do fail at any time.
Do you have a backup?
You could connect the disk up to your PC and test it e.g. using SeaTools for SeaGate disks and WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for WD disks. - brainbrianAspirantThanks, the data on the drive is redundant on another drive, but now my system is at risk. I'll assume this one has just failed and replace it with a new one.
On another note, is it important to use the RED WD drives over the green? The Green run at lower power, etc, but the red are what are listed as supported drives.
I've been running the greens with no problems until now. I like that the green are more enviro friendly... and cheaper. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Green may be advertised as using less power because of Green features. You should not use them in a NAS as they are not designed for it.
Better to use RED disks and if you want to reduce power usage use the disk spin-down, Wake On Lan and/or the power off/on timer features. - brainbrianAspirantThanks for the advice!
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe REDs use the same power as the corresponding Greens. There's no reason to consider the Greens for NAS use at all. Reds are set up for NAS use, and have longer warranties.
