Cannot copy files to NV+ and Apple Probs

I have a ReadyNas NV+ with two 2TB drives in it...

I bought three 3Tb drives a while back and was going to build an unRaid server. Never got around to it so I figured I'd stick two of the drives into my ReadyNas NV+.

The NV+ only recognized the drives as something like 784Gb so I updated the firmware thinking that would fix it. (I know, I should have checked compatibility first...)

So the max capacity for the NV+ is 2TB. That's fine, but now I can't seem to transfer files to the NV+ from my pc. The house has a laptop, a Macbook Pro and another pc as well as two networked media tanks. They all work fine and I can copy files from the NAS TO the pc in question.

When I try to copy a file TO the NAS, I get "Error 0x80070780: The file cannot be accessed by the system."

Also, I now see a bunch of Apple folders showing up on the NAS that never used to such as....

.AppleDB
.AppleDesktop
.AppleDouble
.uid_xxx
Thumbs

I'm thinking it's time to transfer the files from the 2Tb drive to one of the 3TB drives, format the 2TB drives and sell the NAS but I want to make sure it's working properly again first...it has served me very well.

Ideas?

Thanks
Mike

What drives do you have in the NAS currently and how many?
  • .AppleDB and .ds_store are normal mac files. I think ds_store is used to remember the icon placement and other appearance tweaks and I think the AppleDB is related in some way to the AFP protocol (not sure)
I don't know for the others.
    Thumbs.db is, I believe, a windows file.
Not sure why they appear only now though. Most hidden files can be deleted safely on network volumes, though I can't be totally sure as I don't know all of them. So you might as well move them and test, just to be able to move them back into place if needed.

As for the error, you should check the rights on the NAS. I would have suggested to check the network too, but since you can read from the NAS...

Windows explorer can be configured to show hidden files, if they are showing up in a lighter color that is likely what's happened. It is also possible to see them in Finder, but since I'm not a Mac person I don't know how they are presented if you do that.

You can reset owner/group and permissions in Frontview by clicking on the CIFS icon next to the share name (in the share list) and then clicking on the "advanced options" tab (upper right). You enter the settings you want, and check the box next to "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share..." Then click apply (bottom right). The checkbox will clear, and the permissions will be changed in the background. There will be a pop-up in the browser when it finished, it will also be logged.
  • Same for OS X, they appear with faded colours. That said the only way I know to activate them on OS X is to use command line. There also are software that send this command for you like Onyx.
  • You guys ROCK! It was just the silly CIFS thing stopping me from copying to the NAS.

Now I'm in the market for a NEW Nas that does support all these drives I've got. Anybody interested in a barebones NV+? :-)

    Thanks guys
    Mike
