Posted in the Apple developer forum and put in a bug report. That said, some other devlopers say SMB and NAS units are working for them but none are Netgear. I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 and I've tried a few tricks like turning off client negotiation on the Mac but still can't access any shares.

I think that Sierra requires SMB signatures by default. Not sure if that is the problem, but you might look for a way to turn that off.

Skywalker reminded me that we don't turn on SMB2 support by default on RAIDiator-x86
Samba 3.6 (which we use in RAIDiator-x86) added basic support for SMB2.
Perhaps it's required by Sierra.
You could add "max protocol = SMB2" in the global section of /etc/samba/smb.conf and restart samba to try it.
