Convert DVD to Xbox
Hi,
I have my own DVD's of birthdays etc, which were all made on Pinnacle - so are in VOB format.
I would like to make these work on the xbox - via the NAS (Duo V2).
I have tried several ways, using Handbrake or Videora. but they all seem fairly naff, slow and poor quality.
Is there a pucker piece of software to use that will do the job with minimal quality losses ??

- Kojak1AspirantHiya,
Gee this is like hard work to just watch video on an xbox/TV.!! but appreciate your help.
Studio doesnt give too many settings.
But it was as MP4, Full size res (854x480), Frame Rate says 'standard 4000 kbits/sec'
Audio - Stereo, 48 hHz, 128 Kbits/sec.
With Handbrake, it only works if I leave it as default.
But that delivers video in less quality than before - which is a pain.
To be honest, I should've researched BEFORE buying the NAS.
My intention was to have it as a backup of photos/files, and to serve as a mini media player for old DVD's, and films my son watches 100 times a day - like Peppa Pig.!!
Wish xbox played AVI. - sphardy1Apprentice

To be honest, you should have researched the Xbox more - it is very limited in terms of formats supported, particularly when not using Windows Media Center as the source. There are many other Media clients out there that offer far more comprehensive media support.
Also, Xbox does play AVI - the issue is AVI is a container, not a video format. It is probably the video format within the AVI file which is causing the issue
http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/ ... vds-movies - Kojak1AspirantBlimey this is complicated huh.!?
The xbox is something we've had for a few years, and it was mentioned on the Netgear site as being compliant with the NAS. To be honest, being naive, I just assumed that was it in B&W, but clearly there is more to it.!! - what would be better than the xbox ???
So basically, I can make the films AVI, but they need to match exactly to the link you just sent me ?? - sphardy1Apprentice

I would probably say more "misunderstood". Like the information you have read, streaming is documented as "supported", or devices are claimed to be "compatible". In reality there are a lot of different ways to encode media and each software provider has it's own preferred method/options that is/are supported. Commercial companies like Microsoft, Sony, Apple etc tend to restrict the formats they support - to get better support you need to look at open source solutions, but those of course you cannot run on your Xbox as Microsoft don't allow you.The xbox is something we've had for a few years, and it was mentioned on the Netgear site as being compliant with the NAS.
Absolutely, it is compliant with your NAS - but which media can be accessed is a limitation of the Xbox wrt the formats supported. If the Xbox can play it, the NAS can stream it.what would be better than the xbox ???
I will defer that to others - I run an exclusively Mac & Linux setup so my advice probably wouldn't helpSo basically, I can make the films AVI, but they need to match exactly to the link you just sent me ??
If you want to use your xbox as the client - then yes. - Kojak1AspirantCheers.!
And you're right, I misunderstood and dont fully understand it - hence the complications.
Although I have mucked about with videos in the past, I never realised they were so particular.
I shall keep at it - and hopefully, with the patience and assistance from peeps on here - I shall get there.
Thanks once again for the advice.
Everyday is a school day. - signalmanAspirantHi Kojak
I use Pinnacle Studio 15 for making my home videos from my Canon HD10 Camcorder
Pinnacle will also 'import' DVD's and allow you then to export them to MP4's which the xbox will play just fine streamed from a duo v1
It's not the fastest way of doing it, but it works for me
Hope that helps (a bit) - Kojak1Aspirant

Hiya,
I am using the older Studio 11 Ultimate.
I could import the DVD, but when I exported as MP4 (mpeg 4) the xbox wouldnt play it. But I guess from the earlier messages, I need to get the settings tweaked.!?!?
Are you able to email me the settings/screen grab from a Studio conversion by any chance ? - Kojak1Aspirant

Hiya,
just made a quick one using Pinnacle and mirrored the settings on the previous website - and it worked.
It was:
VIDEO - 1280x720, 5000 kbits/sec, 30 frames/sec
Audio - MPEG-4, 128 kbits/sec, 16 bit stereo, 48 khz.
The file went from 94MB to 470MB.!! And the quality wasnt 100%, and it was a little juddery.
However, and this may be where I am mucking it up, the original video (shot on camcorder) was 854x480, 4000 kbits/sec, 25 frames per sec.
Would this be the error of my ways ?? - signalmanAspirantHi Kojak
Just thought...
(It's too late to read through the previous posts so you may have said some of this already)
Are your nas and xbox connected to your router wirelessly or cable - needs to be cable ideally
Does the file you created play ok on your pc
It takes a little while for my nas to 'settle down' after copying files to it (your duo 2 should be quicker than mine) so that's why it may be juddery
..Don't be too paranoid about getting the sizes exactly the same, the xbox will do a lot of the work for you
The last 'home video' I did in pinnacle ended up 1.05gig 1280x720 25 frames per sec 4948 kbps data rate that's for HD 720p which is the best my tv will do
The original video from the Canon HG10 was shot at 1440x1080 25 frames per sec at 16117 data rate
Oh yeah, nearly forgot - that's mp4
I have used wma in the past (which was fine) but ended up converting them again to play on my iphone so I just stick to mp4 now - Kojak1Aspirant

Cheers for the info, I shall try again tonight.
The xbox, TV and NAS are all connected by Ethernet. Laptop is wifi.
Thanks and I will let you know how tonights efforts go.
