Disk configuration on ReadyNAS Ultra 4
Hi everyone, I just received my brand new ReadyNAS Ultra 4 from NewEgg and this is my first NAS, I just want some advice to configure it correctly.
Disk Setup
Maybe I have done something wrong, but the 1st thing I've done when I received it, is that I've put 2 x 2Tb WD Green drives on it and used the NETGEAR 'RAID X-RAID2' configuration. All went fine, I see under 'Volumes' that I have 2 x 2Tb.
Then I realized that I had 2 x 1,5Tb WD Green remaining, so I decided I would put them up for additional space, that would make this setup;
1 = 2Tb
2 = 2Tb
3 = 1,5Tb
4 = 1,5Tb
1st question : Is this a good setup OR I have to put the 2 x 1,5Tb on slots 1 and 2 OR I absolutely need 4 x 2Tb drives?
Now, I've read on the web PDF manual that if I had only a 3rd disk, I could put it in while running (hot-swap), but if I had more, I had to shut down the NAS to insert the disks. Resync was at 30% on disk 2 from disk 1 (?) and I used the shutdown button from the web interface to properly shut down the NAS. Then I inserted the two 1,5 Tb drives on slots 3 and 4.
When It came back, it checked drive #3 and said it was ok, but I didn't see that it checked disk #4..., maybe I missed it, anyway, after said disk #3 was ok, it continued to resync where it was, from 30% (now 35%).
When I go to volumes on the web interface, I only see the 2 2Tb drives, I don't see 2 x 1,5Tb yet, and I actualised the 'page'.
2nd question : Will the 3rd then the 4rd drives will appear once Resync is finished on the 2nd drive?
3rd question : Do I have to do something special for those 2 drives to be part of my original 2 disk setup or all will be handled automatically?
5th question : Considering my setup is ok (2 x 2Tb + 2 x 1,5Tb with RAID X-RAID2 and that makes a single big disk), what will be my total space available at the end and how much redundancy I will have in terms of disks that can be malfunctioning?
Thanks a lot for those helping me on this and for those who tried!

- chirpaLuminaryYou can't add smaller drives after setup. Only same size and larger can be added later.
If you had data backed up and did a factory default with all installed, it would make use of the 1.5TBs. - pplante19AspirantAll drives are empty right now, it basically Resync..., nothing.
So what would you suggest me? Factory reset the NAS, remove all drives, swap them in that order (1,5Tb + 1,5Tb + 2Tb + 2Tb)?
If yes, it will eventually gives my 1,5Tb, but with the 2 x 2Tb, what will it gives me in total as a single big disk? - chirpaLuminaryUse this calculator to determine space: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=67125
- pplante19AspirantOk, do I have to do a factory reset, inverse disks and start over?
If yes..., how I do a factory reset?
Thanks - chirpaLuminaryDisk order doesn't matter, they can remain as is.

- pplante19AspirantJust a quick update and a question about this : I've made the reset, everything is back online, now it says this under volume;
Ch 1 : WDC WD15EARS-00MVWB0 [1397 Gb] 1392 Gb allocated
Ch 2 : WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 [1397 Gb] 1392 Gb allocated
Ch 3 : WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 [1863 Gb] 1392 Gb allocated
Ch 4 : WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 [1863 Gb] (nothing is written yet, the drive is flashing green, I think other drives are finished and this one is in resync)
It's been almost 15 hours since I started the process and on the box screen it says 'Resync C: 10.7%', and on the admin page, sometimes it says something like 24 hours remaining, but sometimes is says 388 hours remaining!! The drives are empty..., is that normal??
Does that mean that the first 3 drives are 'ready' and only the 4th one is processing?
And finally, can I shut down the NAS, move it elsewhere in my house, open it up again and then starting using it while it still resync on the 4th disk?
Thanks a lot for your help! - pplante19AspirantJust to let someone who read this, the problem was the green drives, never use that kind of drive on that NAS..., and maybe other NAS too. They are not built for this and are quite slow. I bought 2 x 3Tb WD Red drive instead and they were up and running in 6 hours, the normal time for a drive to resync itself.
