Do 6Gb/s disks perform much better than 3Gb/s in the Ultra6?

I got 6 of the 2TB Caviar Green WD20EARS from the compatibility list to add to my new ultra6.

I have been copying the data from my old nv+ to the new ultra6 and plan to upgrade the nv+ to new drives when done and use it as an offsite backup for the ultra6.

The store was out of the WD20EARS so I grabbed 4 of the 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP ST2000DL003 for the nv+.

At this point I noticed that the WD20EARS were 3Gb/s & the ST2000DL003 were 6Gb/s... Both have 64 MB of cache though the WD has the Rotational Vibration Safeguard & the Seagate does not.

I am curious whether 6Gb/s disks perform much better than 3Gb/s disks in the Ultra6? I am curious if there are other bottleknecks that make the difference insignficant.

I could try to do an swap to the faster disks if it really matters but don't want to waste my time...

    The Ultra 6 has SATA II ports. Anyway your disks don't even saturate SATA I. Faster disks will make a small difference but you should look at the disk RPM speed and reviews of it's performance.
  • As MDGM advised SATA III disks won't do you much good in any Readynas. That said, I am NOT a fan of the WD20EARS as many users have had odd and random failures with them.

    If you are looking for quality, reliable disks stick with Enterprise disks such as the Seagate Constellation or WD RE3 disks. The best of the consumer disks are the Hitachi 7K2000 or 7K3000 if your NAS models supports them.
