Drive Lost after 5.3.11 update

ReadyNas Duo+. I updated the firmware to the latest 5.3.11 and on reboot of the NAS one of the drives(volumes) is not recognized and the blue light is flashing. I was able to reboot the NAS and do a volume scan, but it did not come back.

What options do I have here? Is there some way to attach the drive to my Win7 PC and run some kind of recovery program on it? Is there something I can try on the NAS itself?

  • Hello there.
    How did the story end?
Could you find out why your drive is dead?
What about the USB Ports? Are they working?

I have a very similar problem with the Duo V2 after the 5.3.11 update:
The box was not starting after the automatic shutdown. The Power LED was just blinking two times.
After a few attempts the box startet again after a very long startup time. One drive is dead now (second one). And the upper USB Port on the back seams to be dead too.
Is there any connection with this firmware update?

I do not trust that system now. Should it be OK to insert a new (same size) HDD in the second slot? I configured the NAS with RAID 1.
I already uploaded the LOGs via the German support but did not receive an answer yet.

    Could you help me please?

    Thank you in advance.

    Greetings from Germany.
  • One internal drive and both usb drives are dead after the update. Could be a coincidence, but 3 out of 4 drives sounds a tad suspicious. I bought two 3TB drives. My main media storage location is now a Win7 PC, and it is backed up to the NAS with a new 3TB and the leftover 2TB drive.

Seems to be a better solution, plus the win solution is much faster than the Duo V2.
  • Thank you for your reply.
Did you get any answer from Netgear except that posts here?

Did I get you right, that the USB ports itself are OK but the connected drives are dead?
If not so, your V2 should be in warranty time. How did you handle that?

    Thank you!
  • I've had the Duo V2 for a few years now. It is definitely outside any 12 month warranty period. It would appear the usb ports are fine, the drives are dead. I'm not using usb attached drives anymore.

Here's a speculation. The usb drives were going full on for months and months. When I ended up with issues on the nas, it had to be reset and it was that power down and up that uncovered issues with the drives. I've seen it happen before where drives that have worked flawlessly for an extednded period of time die the first time they are power cycled.
  • After installing a new HDD the RAID System is rebuild now.
The NAS seems to work normal again. But a few questions remain...

However, thank you for your reply again and a happy new year! :-)
