Drive Replacement Failure # 21269399

MY Readynas Pro 6 began alerting me of a failed drive a few days ago. Raidiator reported the Drive as Dead and the Readynas displayed crossed out the drive on the front display. During this time, the NAS was performing normally and I did not notice any performance difference. Today, I replaced the drive with an identical one.

I waited about an hour after the drive was replaced to see if the Readynas would Sync the data without a reboot. This DID NOT OCCUR. To start the sync process the NAS had to be rebooted. Once rebooted the sync process began and an e message was sent out.

At the same time another message was sent out stating that another drive had failed, while the sync process was underway. There was no problems with the drive prior to the swap.
Before doing anything, I wanted to the wait for the sync process to end. But much to my surprised the sync process ended in about 30 minutes (is this right?). I was expecting it to take about 8 hours.
Currently, Raidiator (4.2.22) reports one dead drive and drive as spare (first time I see this) has a "+" instead of a green light. The Drive with the plus, was the new drive that was swapped.

the worst part is that the files are inaccessible. They are reported as there, but if a try to copy or open one within windows. I receive and error.

What is going on here, does anyone know? Is that drive really dead? Is my data safe? Any suggestions?

What brand and model disks are these?

    What RAID mode were you using? e.g. X-RAID2 (single-redundancy), X-RAID2 dual-redundancy, Flex-RAID with a RAID-5 volume, Flex-RAID with a RAID-6 volume etc.

You should contact NetGear tech support for assistance (see the Online Submission link in my sig). Post your case number. You will likely need the case escalated to get the assistance of a L3 tech.
  • RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks on the raid
WDC WD20EADS-32R6B0 [1863 GB] on the drives - all the same.

Those are Green disks and not suitable for NAS use.
  • Thanks for the reply MDGN

F-me! The unit was purchased from a netgear distributor with them installed!

I can see the drives failing if they are not recommended, but restarting cleanly and syncing properly cannot because of the drives.

It's possible the drives may not have failed at all. The disks probably were on the compatibility list back when you bought the NAS if I remember correctly.
  • I took it for granted that the drive was dead. Now that you mentioned it. I am going to test the drive i pulled out to see if the SMART system has locked the drive.
  • MDGM - You were correct, the first drive which reported errors was fine. I performed a thorough analysis on it, twice and no errors were reported. The second disk that went bad during the sync was the problem. The tech, which was very knowledgeable could no understand what had occurred or why the second drive was only reported as bad during the sync. Lucky the raid was still in tack although it did not load. I was able to finally get my data back and bring the NAS back up with Netgear support.

a dd_rescue of the first drive did not work- that was done twice. I had to manually copy the data via a USB drive. - which was a nightmare and took for ever. one 2TB drive took more than 36 hours to copy. and i had to keep track of what was being copy so i would not completely fill the drive. The NAS while in debug mode does not give directory sizes.

personally, i think this was OS BUG. The Netgear support charge for data recovery was well worth it
