Duo v2 setup
Hi all,
New to NASes and networking generally, a first-time Netgear customer and enthusiastic amateur. I purchased the NAS following a recommendation from my firm's IT manager. I intend to use it as a backup for photographs, to allow me to watch movies and TV without having my main PC on and to allow me to download torrents.
But I'm looking for help setting my ReadyNAS Duo v2 up properly. I bought it about a week ago in Sydney and have since discovered it's the ARM version, it has the latest firmware. I have added a 3TB hard disk and so far the hardware seems to be fine.
The NAS is wired directly to my router, an iiNet Belkin BOB device, a separate cable runs from my router to my DLNA Samsung TV. I have managed to fix its local IP to 10.1.1.3. But no matter what I do I can't seem to set-up remote access on WAN. I can access it fine via my LAN and wifi (on laptop, ipad3 and Android smartphone), but can't seem to thread the connection through my router to allow me to login outside the LAN.
Am i right in thinking that the v2 does not support remote access except through the ReadyNAS remote program, and also does not support webDAV???
I have managed to map a network drive to my media share and generally it works, i can watch my media on my TV with the main computer turned off, but after restarting it after turning it off overnight (it's in my baby's room) it has difficulty picking up the network drive, with the network connection dropping in and out. Is there a way to fix this?
Also, strangely the media share I have set up is listed in windows explorer with a different IP address to my computer's main IP address, is that right?
I've got to say I wish Netgear included more information in the box. I spent most of Saturday trying to figure out how to get to the 'Front View' display, it was only after hours of googling that I discovered the dashboard is the ARM's version of Front View. Plus most of their 'how-tos' are for the older versions that use Front View.
Finally, I downloaded the readyNAS extras pack that contains Python, SABnzbd, Sickbeard and CouchPotato, and have installed these as add-ons, BUT after setting it up, CouchPotato now won't let me login and now I have no idea how to remove it - any advice welcome.
I downloaded Putty to try and access the NAS and remove CP but because of aforementioned IP problems, couldn't login. This is really frustrating, I want to be able to make the most of, what seems like a great, device. Can anyone help iron out these niggles, I'm tempted to send this back to the shop and get a Synology DS212j instead.
Thanks, Chris

- sealaxAspirantAny idea on how to do a secure erase? Any step by step guides, or is it a matter of just selecting the erase option in setup again?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes you would just do a factory default (this should continue to happen automatically on reboot due to the drives being locked) and choose the erase option in the dialog box that comes up after you click setup in RAIDar.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserKeep in mind that the secure erase will take days, so it is worth trying to unlock the drives yourself.
Would be nice if RAIDiator could just unlock the drives. - sealaxAspirantDays?! I just kicked it off and it said 312 minutes approximately...
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserLet us know when it actually finishes.
- sealaxAspiranthi all, after about five hours I gave up and decided to contact customer support. They walked me through the issue, got me to carry out a factory reset and would you believe it this fixed it.
I can now turn it on and off without losing data and without having to go through set-up. My host name is also retained.
Not sure what happened but I'm guessing I didn't carry out the factory reset properly the first time I tried it.
Thanks for all your help. Now if i can just figure out a way to copy my files to the NAS at a speed above 9mb/s i'll be happy. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIs your PC connected to your network via Ethernet or wireless?
9MB/s would indicate you are connected at 100 Mbit/s not gigabit - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHe's using an iiNet BoB, which per Belkin is a fast ethernet device, not gigabit.
Sealax, you can get gigabit speeds by inserting a small gigabit switch between the BoB and all your wired devices. For instance, a GS605. That assumes your main computer has a gigabit NIC card. - sealaxAspirantInteresting, so I'd plug the router into the switch with all other devices and it would improve speed? Pretty sure my motherboard has dual 10/100/1000 ports. Thanks for the tip.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes. Connect the switch to the router and connect the gigabit devices to the switch.
