ESXi 5.1 on Ultra 6 running OS6 6.1.2

Hi everyone,

First off: sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in the forums :-/
If there is already an answer available to my question, please kindly point me to the right topic & lock this one.

I own a RN Ultra 6 running OS6 version 6.1.2, and I would like to install VMware ESXi 5.1 on it.
I found an old guide on how to install VMware server on RN 4.2.x (viewtopic.php?f=35&t=29871), but that's no longer relevant.

Does anyone on these forums own an Ultra 6 too, running OS6, and who has ESXi running on their NAS?
Or could anyone tell me how I might go about trying to get it running on mine (chirpa? )

I realize there are limits to which VM's I could run, given the CPU & memory available.
But 2 or 3 very basic & non-resource-hungry Linux servers would do for my personal use case.
Any guide on getting another hypervisor running on an Ultra 6 with OS6 is also welcome of course.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sven

  • Best bet is VirtualBox. ESX is a type-1 hypervisor, to run bare metal, not on top of RN OS6. Do you want to remove the ReadyNAS OS and just put ESX on it?
  • I feel so stupid... must have been the hour :?

VirtualBox would do just fine, thanks chirpa!
I'll search the forums to see if anyone has done this already.
  • There are a few threads on the subject. On the Ultra, since its an Atom CPU, you can only run 32-bit virtual machines. That CPU can't virtualize 64-bit OSes.
