Factory default - data on 3TB drives cannot add 2TB drives
I had some issues (I think Crashplan updates filled up my root mount causing it to no longer boot) that drove me to factory default. I have updated to OS 6.7.1 while I was at it. In the process I cre...

I ended up backing up the data to an external drive and then deleting all volumes. I removed the 3 X 3TB drives and then created a new "data" volume on the 3 X 2TB drives. Once that was created I added the 3 X 3TB drives back in and the volume expanded to include them.
Thanks for your help.

u can change to flexi raid and create 3 x 2tb drives as new volume
the 3x 3tb first volume will stay meaning u have 2 volumes
no point moving data from first volume to 2nd volume

I've never done it. but is there something preventing him from destroying the single-drive volume once he has copied the data to the other volume? The GUI certianly makes it look like it should work. Then, 2 TB of the 3TB drive could be added to the 3x2TB volume either manually or by switching to XRAID once there is but one volume..

That is what I would like to accomplish. I had already started restoring data from a backup and did not want to have to start that over if I could avoid it.

I think once you installed the 3TB drive, you can't put anything smaller then 3TB into the NAS because it's smaller. It has to be equal or greater then the size of the HDD already in the NAS. As in you can expand the space going with equal or larger HDD's, but you can't shrink the system space by installing smaller drives.
You would need to start witht he smaller HDD FIRST into your NAS, let it do it's thing and then when done go ahead with the larger HDD. If it's just one, 1TB of the drive will go to waste until you at least install a second 3B HDD.
So again you can go equal or greater in size, you can't go smaller. You can start out smaller and then go bigger. You'r best bet is to just start over. Make sure you have backups of what you need. You should always have a backup of your NAS anyway. Start with the 2TB drives installed first and only. After it does it's thing and is done then and only then do you want to pop the 3TB drives in.
