False SMART errors from bay on NAS Duo??
Hi all I've been puzzling over why I'm continually receiving smart errors from bay one on my nas duo.
I've replaced the drive in bay one with 4 different brand new drives and also swapped the good drive from two into one and that then begin the produce errors.
Its on a NASDuo running RAIDiator 4.1.9-T6 [1.00a043]
MacPro 10.6.8
2x Seagate ST2000DM001-9YN164 [1862 GB]
Configuration: X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 2 disks
Has anyone experienced this before or know how to resolve as its very annoying.
Many thanks in advance.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat SMART errors are you getting?
Are the drives all the same brand and model number?
The ST2000DM001 is not on the Hard Disk HCL. So it's likely the issue is due to using incompatible drives. - devs1AspirantHi and thanks for the reply. The last message I received was " reallocated sector count has increased in the last day.
Disc 1:
Previous count: 3680
Current count 3696
Both drives are the same. I've read of others using these drives without any problems.
The original supplied drives were replaced due to the same error. I really do believe that it's a problem with the bay but do not know what to do..
Thanks again. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat count is huge. Are you able to connect the disk up to a SATA port in your PC and check it using SeaTools?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAlso this error is not the bay - reallocated sectors are detected and managed by the drive itself. There is nothing the NAS can to to create that kind of error.
- devs1AspirantHi, I didn't know about that tool. I've downloaded and tested on the drive from the bay that is reporting the error and it has passed the short generic test.
Is there anything further that I should test?
Many thanks! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe normal Seagate test should fail with 3680 reallocated sectors (although the short generic test might pass).
I would also download Western Digital's LifeGuard tool, and use it to check the smart statistics. (you can also use Acronis Drive Monitor for this). Both are free.
Normal guidance is that a disk needs replacing if it has more than 50 reallocated sectors. - devs1AspirantThanks Stephen, I'm connecting the drive via a caddy to an xp box and I'm not sure if I can access all the features of sea tools via this method. I'll download those apps and see what they have to report thanks for the info. It's appreciated.
- devs1AspirantI've tested both of the drives in the WD lifeguard tool and both are reporting free from smart errors.
Any thoughts as to why the nas would say differently or how I can correct this? Or how going forward that I can lookout for drive failure?
Many thanks. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOnce sectors are reallocated they're reallocated. A subsequent SMART check using a PC won't even notice the previously reallocated sectors, I think. A drive with that high a count is problematic. You could try doing a factory reset then restoring from backup.
Also T6 is an old beta. You might want to update to the latest beta release. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
No, that is not correct. The count is retained within the drive itself, so you should get the same stats reported on the PC as the Duo.mdgm wrote: Once sectors are reallocated they're reallocated. A subsequent SMART check using a PC won't even notice the previously reallocated sectors, I think.
Read/write tests would pass of course (assuming all the bad sectors have been reallocated).
Can you try Acronis Disk Monitor? Here is a download link: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/do ... e-monitor/
If Acronis Disk Monitor also shows 0 reallocated sectors when you look at the stats, then that suggests that the NAS is somehow not reading the stats correctly - which is very strange. I agree that upgrading the firmware to the released version is a good idea. If you are still seeing reallocated sectors on the NAS but none on the PC after the upgrade, then you should open a support ticket.
