Filesystem layout
I just bought a NV+ and am working on the decent configuration. Once I was able to ssh into the machine, I noticed that the / filesystem was very cluttered. I created a share for each person that used the network (three people) and noted that the share is under /. I added a couple of addon (like LED and monitor) and that is also located on the /. I then look at under /home, the only directory is "ftp", and under /c/home is admin, and users that I created are just sitting under /c. Incidentally, the users that I created I thought would also be automatically created as shares of home, but is would seem that my user shares are sitting under the / filesystem (with the same usernames that I created at username).
The first question is, is there a way to clean up the / filesystem to be more in-line with a the FSSTND? Secondly, am I doing something wrong (or maybe the samba install is a subset of the normal samba), or is there no way to first place all of the added users the /c/home/username and furthermore create a share to /c/home/username. Also, another issue that I am having is that I can't put in line the UID/GID that I use for the other machines in my network. When I create a user, is do expect is to have a UID of 1000 and move up from there as I add user. So how badly would I screw things up is change the UID for media and backup and then move change the UID/GID for my users in the layout that I would normally have in place... Specifically have 1000 be used for my first user, 1001 for the next user, etc. Media and backup could be placed at some higher numbers.

Don't try to "clean" things up as it will likely just cause problems.kcallis wrote:

By default private home shares should automatically be created for new users.
If you have the NV+ v1 (silver chassis), open Frontview, go to Security > User & Group Accounts and select Preferences from the drop down box. You should see the option to enable/disable private home shares. Private home shares can only be accessed by the user they are created for and by the "admin" user.kcallis wrote:

Not sure about this. You would have to correct permissions using the advanced options tab under Shares > Share Listing > Sharename and probably run the Fix Home Share Ownership add-on. If some scripts set ownership of the media, backup shares etc. using the default UID then there could be issues, otherwise not. This obviously wouldn't be supported. I'd suggest you have an up to date backup before trying this.- Luckily, I am still working the kinks out, so I have no worries about a full backup. Interestingly enough, I noticed that all of my user accounts where located at /c. I moved the user directories to /c/home. I also noticed in /etc/passwd that the home directory was correct insofar as /c/home/<username>. I added the samba add-on, and check again, and saw that all of my users were once again back in /c instead of /c/home.
I finally found out what my error was! I actually created shares with the usernames. When I tried to create accounts later, I received an error that the name already existed. I deluser the usernames, and then I removed the shares. I then made sure that I created the user names properly, and set the security properties. I manually changed /etc/password to give the UID I wanted (and changed the default media and backup to other UID... Might cause problems later). Now is seems like it is working more to my likes, although I don't like that webroot is not under /c/home, but I can live with that until I look at seeing how to solve that one. - What samba add-on did you install? Was it the samba 3.3.7 add-on? That add-on is no longer necessary. 4.1.9-T6 includes a newer version of samba.
- I am using 4.1.8... I didn't know there was a later version... And yes, it is 3.3.7 that I added. Everything seems to be working correctly, although when using Ubuntu to look at the share. the only shares I was able to see was media, backup, and my USB drive. I haven't figured out how to authenticate, and when I click on the workgroup, it tells me that I don't have permission to access that workgroup. One step at a time I guess! So where does on find 4.1.9 firmware? Looking at the download section, 4.1.9 is only for the x86 systems.
- Thanks for the quick response. The only other issue that I have run into is the fact that on my Ubuntu 11.10 machine, when I attempt to access my workgroup, I get the following:
Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server
My security mode is set to user. My User & User Account setting is enabled across the board. It might just be some funky way to authenticate on 11.10! - Are you sure the workgroup is set correctly on the NAS?
- Considering that I don't have a Windows machine around to see if it can access the workgroup, do you have any suggestion that I might do to check the validity of my setup. I have 4.1.9 (T6) ready to install, but I am holding out to see if I can get things working before heading to a beta version of the firmware. Do I need to add the username to the Add Shares list or should the home directories should have been accessible automatically. Also, since I have not figure out how to authenticate yet on the Ubuntu side, it would be hard to see home directories if I haven't told the nv+ who I am (from a CIFS standpoint).
