Format etc drives without access to SATA ?
I'm about to get rid of my last PC and go exclusively to laptops. One of the reason I kept it was that I remember that if I need to use an old ReadyNAS drive in another ReadyNAS, then first I have to remove all the partitions etc. This means having access to a SATA connection. Laptops in general don't have these.
Is there a an alternative way to do this in a ReadyNAS unit or in a USB enclosure ?
Cheers.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes, you can use a USB enclosure to do this.
One downside of a USB enclosure though is that it may not work with vendor tools to diagnose drives e.g. SeaTools or WD LifeGuard Diagnostics. - xeltrosApprenticea NAS is just a mono purpose PC. So they have access to SATA. Since Netgear is kind enough to provide a full Debian, you have access to fdisk via SSH which will do the job, just check carefully which drive you erase of course... if you have a newer NAS with HDMI, I believe you can setup a full UI and have a linux PC with all the tools (Gparted, file browser...)
As said before USB is another option. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou can also purchase an eSATA expresscard for the laptop. If you go that route, you also need a power supply for the disk and an eSata-to-Sata cable.
