FTP resumable download functioning?

Grabbing very large files remotely almost always fails due to long download time across the WAN. I'm looking for a resumable solution.

Right now, I'm trying to get it to work locally.

ANyone successfully use a resumable download manager with FTP (not HTTP) on the readyNAS??

I have not found a resumable download client that works with the FTP server in ReadyNAS.
iGetter on Mac OSX does not work.
GetRight on Windows does not work.

I can use Firefox on both platforms to go to FTP://192.168.1.51/ and browse and download to my hearts content. But once I hand the downloads to a managed downloader like iGetter or GetRight it fails. I've used GetRight for about 12-14 years and I've never had issue getting it to work with any HTTP or FTP server. iGetter is less resilient than GetRight, but this is probably the first time using it for FTP.

I can telnet to port 21 and manually initiate FTPs successfully.
I can use an FTP client.

But the download managers fail. I've played with settings, I''ve got everything doing anonymous downloads to eliminate security confusions.
I'm not sure why both programs can't navigate the FTP server, when everything else works.

  • Just figured it out... the downloaders are paying attention to the masquerade address that is presented in the 227 Entering Passive Mode response. That Response holds the IP address of the FTP server and the data port that is used for the transfer. The other methods appear to be less intelligent and ignore this data using the IP address they are already speaking to.

Both iGetter for Mac and GetRight for Windows successfully paused and resumed downloads larger than a GIg.

Now to move the service to work across the WAN.

FileZilla handles the masquerade address better (detects the issue and substitutes the address in the IP header).
