Getting 6.5 MB/s transfers on a 1 GB full duplex connection?

Using Win 7.1, gigabit Ethernet connected to gigabit switch GS108, to a Duo (Sparc) using the latest firmware. The LED's on the switch is showing gigabit speeds. Frontview is showing the interface on the Duo to be 1000 Mbit, full duplex. So is Link speed in Device Manager-Network Adapter-Intel Ethernet Connection in Windows

I am bulk copying about 4 GB of mp3 files from my desktop (internal sata drive) to the Duo (in Windows Explorer). 6.5 MB/s seems a tad slow.

I rebooted the Duo before starting the copy process. Windows estimates the transfer to take a day!

Whats wrong with my setup?

Thanks.

    Journaling is disabled
    Fast CIFS writes is enabled
Fast USB disk writes is enabled

    Gigabit full duplex connection
Speed Duplex Mode: Auto negotiation (greyed out)
    MTU: 7936 (greyed out)
    Jumbo frames: enabled
    Error Count: 0's all around

Disk on the PC showing no SMART errors. I have temporarily dismounted and disconnected the USB drive attached to the Duo (for backing up the Duo).

I have reviewed http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12242 and seem to be doing all the right things ..

What brand and model drives do you have installed in the NAS?

So you are running 4.1.13 on your ReadyNAS?

Note the Duo (v1) is essentially using the same CPU and memory as a product first released in 2006. Early NAS units with gigabit don't have anything like the performance of the new devices available today.

Can you disable Jumbo Frames and see what impact that has on performance?

For Jumbo Frames to work, the NAS, switch and PC all need to support it, have it enabled (if there is an option to enable it) and for the Jumbo Frames implementation to be compatible amongst all the devices.
  • I am using two 2 TB Seagate ST2000DM001in X-RAID mode. The drives are on the HCL for the Duo v 1. I am running RAIDiator 4.1.13.

The Jumbo Packets on the ethernet adapter on my PC was set to disabled. I enabled it and set it to 9014 bytes (the other choices are 4088 and disabled).

[Oddly enough, the Duo was still showing MTU of 7936 when JF was disabled on the PC. Maybe that was the link negotiated with the GS108?]

    According to http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... dapters%3F the max frame size on a GS108 (un-managed) is 9216 bytes.
Edit: I have GS108v3. According to http://www.netgear.jp/download/datashee ... 8-4903.pdf it supports Jumbo frame: up to 9,720 bytes

I restarted the PC and now the transfers are in the 7 - 9 MB/s, depending on the size of the files getting copied. Jumbo frames are on all around now.

I'll try disabling jumbo frames on both the PC and Duo tomorrow ans test transfer speed using a big file.

    Tired. Must sleep now.
    [Edit: must really sleep now.]

If you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs) what does your partition.log look like?

How full is your data volume?
  • When I woke up this morning, I see transfer rates of 20 MB/s. I think that enabling Jumbo frames on my PC's NIC fixed it. I also disabled IPv6 on the PC.
Closing FrontView in my browser also helps.
    Thanks for your help.
  • I also find it's better to setup FTP on the readynas units and use FTP to transfer files to and from the box. Windows network sometimes lags things out very badly for no apparent reason. I always see consistent speeds using FTP.
