HDD Replacement - Expected Rebuild Time
Hi,
I have a Netgear Utlra 6 with 5x2TB drives and 1x3TB drive. I removed one of my 2TB drives and then replaced it with a brand new 3TB drive. The rebuild has started but has been going for 3 days with me not knowing what is going on. Everything still work fine, I guess, the last msgs in the log is as follows:
Wed Jun 13 23:21:30 Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 1.
Wed Jun 13 23:19:16 New disk detected. If multiple disks have been added, they will be processed one at a time. Please do not remove any added disk(s) during this time. [Disk 1]
Wed Jun 13 23:15:59If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 6 volume, your volume is still protected if this is your first failure. A 2nd disk failure will make your volume unprotected. If this disk is a part of a RAID 10 volume, your volume is still protected if more than half of the disks alive. But another failure of disks been marked may render that volume dead. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.
Wed Jun 13 23:15:59 Disk failure detected.
Wed Jun 13 23:15:34 A disk was removed from the ReadyNAS.
Wed Jun 13 23:15:34 Disk removal detected. [Disk 1]
It is now Saturday 23:53:00. I know that the rebuild would take a long time, but this seems excessive. Is there any way to check how the rebuild is going, and/or if perhaps something has gone astray and perhaps I need to intervene?
Thanks

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredLook under Volumes in Frontview. Do you see resync progress there?
- quazi_dudeAspirantNo, there is no progress there or anywhere that I can tell. It only gives me the amount of space currently used. Even when I added the new drive and I got the message saying the volume will be rebuilt, but no progress info was displayed at all. Should it be alright to just remove this HDD again and put it back in?
- quazi_dudeAspirantOk, I removed HDD and re-inserted, syncing actually kicked off this time and there are progress stats showing up now, crossing fingers all goes well.
How long does it typically take? - quazi_dudeAspirantOk, I'm clearly not paying much attention this early in the morning. It says estimated time is about 7.5 hrs. Will post actual time when complete.
- quazi_dudeAspirant7 hours 50 minutes for the 3TB to resync. Then another estimated 2 hours 30 minutes to expand my volumes for replacing 1 x 2TB drives with a 1 x 3TB drive.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere shouldn't be any expansion when you replace a 2TB drive with a 3TB drive. Using single-redundancy you need two higher capacity disks for vertical expansion. Using dual-redundancy you need four.
- quazi_dudeAspirantI already had 3TB installed amongst my 5 other 2TB drives, but obviously couldn't make use of that extra 1TB as you indicated. But now that I have replaced one of the 2TB with a 3TB, the extra 1TB space should become available. I now have 2 x 3TB and 4 x 2TB.
However, the sync just finished but I received the following message:
"Found space that can be used to expand capacity, expansion process will start during next boot."
I rebooted the device and then received this message:
"Volume expansion failed"
That doesn't seem good. All the drives are green and working correctly, however with 2 x 3TB and 4 x 2 TB drives, shouldn't I be expecting about 10 TB of total usable space (using 1 disk redundency), or is my bad maths getting the better of me? FV is telling me I only have 9TB available. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAh.
What disks were installed when you last did a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).
Currently there is an 8TB limit on online expansion i.e. if your volume started out with 2TB of capacity then you cannot expand beyond 10TB. - quazi_dudeAspirantI have never completed a factory restore. I purchased this in Nov-2011 and first installed 5 x 2TB drives. I only installed the 2 x 3TB in last week. I am not familiar with the restrictions of online expansion, didn't realise there were any, but does mean I cannot expand beyond 10TB of "actual" available space or "theoretical" (5 x 2TB HDDs) space?
I am running Radiator v4.2.19 and noticed the latest version available from the system update is v4.2.20, (v4.2.21 from direct download - not sure why this is different) but didn't want to start messing with firmware since everything is currently working fine and I don't have backups of my data if something goes wrong. I was under the impression that my version of firmware is able cater for 3 TB drives. Do you think this might be causing my volumes not to expand, or perhaps the issue mentioned previously? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you had all 5 2TB drives installed in the system when you did the first power up (buillding the raid array) then you should be able to expand up to 16 TB.
On the other hand, if you powered up with 1 drive installed, and put in the rest afterwards, then you can't expand beyond 10 TB available space in the volume, unless you do a factory reset.
BTW, many of us have discovered the hard way that RAID does not eliminate the need for backups. You should create one before you continue to troubleshoot your expansion problem.
