Help backing up to HD attached to PC
In another thread I was advised to back up my NAS to an external HD and then reformat my NAS.
In the past I've attached a USB drive directly to the NAS for backups, and its slow. It was suggested if my network is gigabit to connect the drive to my PC/Mac, then back up that way. So that is what I did, got a brand new WD 4 TB My Book drive.
When I go into Frontview and look at the destination sources I get RSync, FTP, NFS Server and the only USB options are those directly in the NAS itself. So I think its NFS or another option, but then it asks for host and location and that I am not sure how to fill out.
Any help so I can get this started this weekend?

- You don't have to use frontview backup or PC, you can also access the shares directly on the mac/pc and copy them. In the case of a windows PC, teracopy is useful because it verifies. I use robocopy, because it is capable of incremental backup. There are similar utilities for the mac.
- Can I simply drag and drop? I am finding Mac utilities but there is a lot of technical language mixed in there and some of these programs cost $25-$40, do not want to do that and if will not work.
- I found Carbon Copy Cloner - free 30 day trial so I'll give it a whirl.
How do I find the time machine sparse bundle or whatever to back that up from the ReadyNas to the WD external drive? - If you want to transfer time machine backups, you would indeed have to get the sparse bundle. This is not a shared folder on OS6 and I doubt it was either on OS4.
I just can't see how you would do that without using SSH. This would require sharing the USB disk over network, mounting it on your NAS then copying.
Another option would be to edit apache file and have it list the contents of the directory then initiate the transfer from the PC to the USB disk.
For the copy, the drag and drop should work fine, but if you get an error this will begin from scratch. Ultra copier is an option. Carbon copy cloner is a well known option though I've seen it used instead of Acronis to create bootable recovery disks.
