How-to for front USB port and backup button
I cannot find any documentation on how to program the front USB port and backup button found on the NV+. Can someone point me to the instructions? I want to backup the entire NAS to one or two external drives using the one-button on the front panel.
I would like to do this without logging into FrontView, if possible. I am setting up a ReadyNAS for a client who I don't want accessing FrontView.

- maxblackAspirantThe instructions are in the user manual starting on page 1-42 "Configuring Backup Jobs". Once your backup job is configured, you select that job number for the front button (pg 1-49).
I set-up mine to bu the entire volume C to my USB drive as a Remote Rsync Server, see here:
http://www.rnasguide.com/2010/09/23/rsy ... -usb-disk/
The tricky part for me was formatting my USB drive to EXT2 (instead of EXT3, for maximum speed). But now that it's set-up and working I need only:
1. Power the USB drive (I leave it plugged-in to the front USB port but the power brick is pulled)
2. Wait some seconds for the drive to be recognized and when the LED stops flashing, press it once
3. When the backup is over, I press-and-hold the Backup button for >5 secs until the drive LEDs flash once
4. NV+ says "USB disconnect" or some such and I pull the power plug on it
No need to access Frontview. BTW if you are religious about properly unmounting the USB drive (as you should be) you should also find/implement Fast USB Writes in Frontview. - fixmacsGuideMany thanks for this clear exposition on how to backup to USB using the front USB port and the bu button. One lingering question: how do you know when the backup is completed? The UBB drive will be disconnected and stored off-site.
- maxblackAspirant>how do you know when the backup is completed?
Good question. I've "babysat" my backups since I figured this out, and have Frontview open which tells me when it's done, as does too the NV+ LCD. I don't recall if the Backup button LED is an indicator i.e. if it goes off or what--but it does blink throut iirc, so the absence of blinking on the NV+ and also your USB drive (assuming it has a LED too) would be one way I suppose.
The most foolproof would be to have the NAS send you an email when it's complete.
Don't forget: before disconnecting the USB drive, hold the Backup button 5 secs (until all LEDs blink once). This is the safe way to unmount the drive given you are going to want to use the Fast USB writes option. - fixmacsGuideYou should be hired by Netgear. Your tech suggestions are clear, concise and accurate. Much appreciated. I will use all the indicators you suggested including having FV send an email notice. By the way, I have the same RND4410 but with 1 GB RAM. I think it's worth the $37 I invested in the memory.
Problem solved. - maxblackAspirantWell, it's not working yet ;) but you're welcome so far. :)
I do have a 1GB SO-DIMM on order so will draw neck-and-neck with you shortly.
Post-back if you have more questions. - fixmacsGuideMy settings may be incorrect. I've put in ten hours troubleshooting. Followed instructions, Ran FrontView backup, then switched to Rsync, then after 24 hours of bu activity the NAS says the job is stalled. I cancelled and deleted the bu job. I also cannot get NAS to work with any alert email settings using two different email accounts (Apple me.com and AOL), and now also, ReadyNAS Remote has stopped working. I am unable to log in to NAS remotely with a "failed to login" error. Everything was working okay before I configured the NAS for the USB backup job. Not sure how to punt and regroup at this point.

I'm not sure how to help you fixmacs unless you are able to describe your settings in detail, or post screenshots. I don't know either what "NAS says the job is stalled" means--is there a Frontview pop-up? That's what it says? - fixmacsGuideI am stuck. I went into the Backup panel for FrontView. Clicked on the LOGS icon. A new window opened with the following words: Accessing Backup Logs...
This window has been stuck in this state for three hours. How many hours ro days should I wait for the log to appear? - fixmacsGuideSame problem here:
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=52565&p=337860#p337860 - maxblackAspirantWell, something's not right. :p
How did you format the USB drive (and to what file system)? Before you "switched to Rsync" did the simple Frontview backup work? Did Rsync update the files on the backup?
Unless you want to learn Linux and nose-around using SSH, I think your best bet is to open a support ticket with Netgear.
