How to Rsync to external USB?

I've been using Robocopy with the /mir switch to back up Windows user data over the network to a ReadyNas Pro 6 Business. works like a charm. But now I want to backup ReadyNas data to an external USB drive (as a tertiary backup). I've tried creating backup jobs on the ReadyNas, but I prefer the granularity and logging capabilities of my own scripts--which I assume will need to use Rsync on the ReadyNas.

I've enabled Rsync in Frontview Services > Standard File Protocols, but I'm not sure what this does for me.

What I want to happen, daily and automatically, is a copy of all diffs to the external USB drive--the same way Robocopy /mir is now backing up user data. How can I write my own Rsync script and have it run on a schedule? Will I need a separate Linux box to make this happen? If so, does that mean the data will traverse the network before hitting the USB drive? Or will it go directly from the ReadyNas out the USB port?

To do this on the ReadyNAS you can use Frontview backup as described here: Rsync backup to USB disk. You can then take a look at what Frontview does to get an idea as to how you should configure your own script if you're not happy with how Frontview does it.
  • What do you mean "take a look at what Frontview does"? Is there some low-level view of the script that Frontview runs internally?

At this point I'm giving up on USB-connected storage on the ReadyNas. Too slow and not flexible enough.

Essentially, the challenge is backing up all the block data on the ReadyNas--up to ~9TB.

We've got 6 clients (more coming) each dual-homed with folder redirection to iSCSI targets over a dedicated iSCSI network. But there's also LOB data on some clients that cannot reside on the SAN. this is backed up over the IP network using a script (robocopy /mir) that runs on client logoff (it's cheap). The next step is nightly differentials of the whole ReadyNas. this means scripting iSCSI connects/disconnects to each target (iscsicli.exe) and diffing each users files across the lan to a jbod server. Kind of a kludge but it's cheaper than buying another ReadyNas.
  • 1. System > Performance > Enable fast USB disk writes
    2. Volumes > USB Storage > Options > Format EXT3
    3. Be sure to use Volumes > USB Storage > Options > Disconnect before disconnecting

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot.

Still, In regard to backing up user data from iSCSI targets, I believe a Backup Job can only copy block data to the USB drive. There is no NAS gateway internal to the ReadyNas. If you want to backup file data (instead of a snapshot of the LUN) you have to use some external server that will overlay the filesystem then copy it back over the network to the USB share.

For backing up iSCSI targets yes you would be best to run software on the server you mount the iSCSI initiator on. It may be better to connect the USB disk to that server (if you go down the USB disk route) or if your server has an eSATA port, perhaps use that.
