How to upgrade firmware of an HDD, which is part of a RAID array in a ReadyNAS?

Assume you need to upgrade the firmware of an HDD, which is part of a RAID array in a ReadyNAS.

How I would do it: (1) Shutdown the nas and (2) completely separate it from power. (3) Remove the concerned drive from nas and put into external chassis. (4) Connect the chassis to a workstation. (5) Use workstation to do the maintenance on HDD using tool of concerned manufacturer. (6) Put the HDD back into nas using same slot as it was in before. (7) Reconnect the nas to power and switch it on for booting.

Now, beyond this, is there any procedure/best practice where you can leave the HDD in the nas, boot the nas in a dumb mode allowing a workstation to access the HDD and do the necessary maintenance using the manufacturer's tool?

Any other experiences/ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks; it seems, that beyond removing the HDD there is no other way.

You would need to remove the disk from the NAS. It's possible an external enclosure may not be compatible with the firmware update tool.

The tool to update the firmware on the HDD probably comes with a disclaimer that your data may be lost. In any case it is advisable to update your regular backup first.
