Increase storage capacity of RN102
Hello Folks,
I am hoping someone can confirm (oe even tried) what I read in the Software Manual V6.7.
I want to increase storage capacity on an RN102 with 2X 1TB drives. Redundancy is not important... yet.
I had 1TB in the RN102, 70% full. I installed a second 1TB while the RN102 was powered off. When I turned
it on, I still had 1TB with a 1TB mirror. I must have had X-Raid enabled.
I read in this forum that I could pull out the second drive and switch the first one to Flex-Raid.
Then I can restart by inserting the second drive again and tell the RN102 to setup both volumes as JBOD.
Is there a risk of losing data on the first disk when I pull out the second one?
The second option, as stated in the manual, is to replace either disks with a bigger one. Let it synch up with the first one,
then replace the first disk with a bigger disk as well. Same question: Do I lose data on disk 1?
Any other methods that would avoid buying another 1TB disk to backup the data first?
I am also trying to avoid recreating all the accounts and shares.
I wish this process were more detailed in the documentation, especially what to consider when adding a second disk.
Thanks,
Pesc
Hello Pescatore04,
Switching to FlexRAID from XRAID will not delete data as long as there is no DESTROY VOLUME clicked and DESTROY word typed. However, it is important and we always strongly recommend to always have full backup of the data, after all, it is not wise to store important data to just one device.
I believe your first option is okay.
As for the second option, no it would not lose any data. You are performing volume expansion which is allowed on XRAID. It should be done one disk at a time.

Option one won't work. Even switching to FlexRAID, you'll have a RAID array that wants a second drive added to restore the redundancy it once had. You would have had to switch to FlexRAID first to allow the second drive to be additional non-redundant space.
To get where you want to be, you'll need to copy off the data, do a factory default with just one drive installed, switch off XRAID, then install the second drive.
