Invalid Checksum Errors
Hey Everyone,
I have just received my second ReadyNAS NV+ and want to enable root so I can tweak a few settings. So, I installed my drives and 1GB of Corsair memory and booted up. I proceeded to download Enable Root SSH (from http://www.readynas.com/?cat=36) and attempted to install the addon. The first screen (after uploading the .bin) worked fine and said the package was valid, however after proceeding I get a popup saying:
"Invalid checksum detected in the update file. Update aborted"
I've been searching and trying ideas for the last day and a half and am getting a bit frustrated now. So far I've tried the following:
- Basic Reboot
- Reboot with Volume Scan
- Reboot with Check and fix quotas
- Factory Reset (with only 1 drive in)
- Attempted update with multiple browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome on both Windows 7 64b and Windows XP Machines)
And I have been unable to get it to install.
So - I just tried installing the same .bin on my other unit and it was unsucessful as well - however in the past I was able to install packages on that one just fine. I wonder - could this be a router issue? That is the only thing that is different about my network at this point that I can think of.
Any ideas/help would be great.
Luke

- WhoCares_MentorMay be a silly question but did you try to download the addon again and try with that copy? I'm aware that the verification process in the first step said all would be fine but to my knowledge the checksum verification is done after that. So the first step just checks for a successful upload of the addon to the NAS but not whether the file actually is ok or not.
-Stefan - lpittmanAspirantHey Stefan,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I've tried downloading the addon multiple times, from multiple machines (2 Windows 7 and 1 Windows XP), from multiple browsers. I am going to try conecting the machine to a different router next... what a pain in the butt.
Any other ideas?
Luke - WhoCares_MentorHmm. I understand that you have SSH access to your second NAS. If so there's two things you can check. First, the permission settings of the /tmp directory - should be 1777 (yup, that's really 1777 or rxwrwxrxt). Second you can try to upload the file on the second NAS but not install it. Instead after uploading have a look into the /tmp directory. There should be a file named update_file (or sth similar, I don't have access to my boxes right now). Check the file size and run md5sum against the file, maybe that's going to give some hints.
-Stefan - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAlso the NV+ is a Sparc ReadyNAS. So make sure the Sparc version is the one you downloaded.
- WhoCares_MentorMatt, really now. He stated in his first post that the upload process said the image was valid. That wouldn't happen if he'd uploaded a file for the wrong architecture.
-Stefan - lpittmanAspirantThanks for your help. I have found the solution and (unfortunately) Matt was correct. I knew the NV+ is Sparc based, however for some reason I was still downloading the x86 version. I just assumed, like Stefan, that the system would give me a different error or something if I had the incorrect architecture, but it doesn't, it simply says invalid checksum. This may be something for the developers to look at changing - some sort of notification would have been nice.
I feel like a moron for downloading the wrong version though. Jebus. Glad I am getting out of the technology industry because I'm sure warn out! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe EnableRootSSH add-on is a very old add-on presumably built with a very old internal NetGear SDK back when there was only the sparc platform (most likely they simply made just a few small modifications to the build_addon script when making the x86 version) and thus doesn't have the "arch=nsp" for Sparc or "arch=x86" for x86 entry in the add-on header (if interested at what I mean take a look at the build_addon script in the SDK: How to develop a Frontview Add-on and also open the EnableRootSSH bin file in a text editor and look at the start of the file), so I suspected that an add-on for the wrong architecture may possibly be picked up later than it would be otherwise on some firmware versions.
What version of RAIDiator are you running lpittman? - WhoCares_MentorYeah, right. I was thinking about a wrong version, too, but discarded that possibility due to the fact that the addon was downloaded multiple times. Should have trusted my own rule that the most simple solution generally is the one one is looking for. So thanks for correcting me and giving the right answer to the problem.
-Stefan - lpittmanAspirantI am running 4.1.7.
Yeah Stefan - that's the funny thing - when dealing with my customers I generally make it a point to ask the obvious questions first (is it plugged in? lol...) and would think that I would ask myself these kinds of questions first as well, however I guess I thought I was too smart to have made such a simple mistake (or something).
Anyhow, I do appreciate the time ya both put into it!
Cheers. - chongkyAspirantHi, I'm using NV+ with RAIDiator-4.1.8, the system was not very stable, I decided to reinstall the 4.1.8, but I get the checksum error and the update was aborted. I tried adding other add on, and get the same checksum error. Now I'm stuck. Please advise what can I do, will reset to factory default fix this problem?
