Is my Ultra 6+ a good candidate for OS 6?
I have an Ultra 6+ that I've upgraded to 4gb of RAM and installed a Core2Duo E7500 in it. I have 4x4tb & 2x3tb drives in it.
It's served me very well over the years, but the OS is starting to show its age. I'm getting more and more into hosting services on the NAS like Plex, SickRage, and others. Every now and then something will complain about the OpenSSL version being too old, or not being able to install some package because a certain dependency didn't exist in Debian Etch. Keeping things up to date is tough since Etch is so old and unsupported.
I see that 6.5 is the latest OS 6 release. If I backed up all of this data (almost 14tb!), did the factory reset, all that jazz, and upgraded to OS6, would my NAS take it fine? What are some major caveats to look out for?
Also, can I go higher than 4tb in this unit? What models are recommended?
OS 6 is of course not supported by Netgear on the Ultra, but you've already voided the warranty with your hardware mods.
Lots of people here have switched to it in their legacy x86 NAS with good results. Maybe try it with a scratch disk first, and give it a test drive. The process is reversible. Do make a backup first.
You should be able to use 8 TB drives in the ultra (easier with OS 6 because it has no expansion limit). I'd keep away from the Seagate archival drive - SMR is not the best technology for general use - but the others (WD Red, Red Pro, Seagate Nearline, VN etc) should work. There other some other posters here who have used these bigger drives in their Ultra and Pro NAS.

Hello dijonnaise,
Welcome to the community!
Replacing internal components voids the warranty of the product, it also is not supported by technical support of Netgear.
Let's wait if there are community members who can share their thoughts and answer you.

No expansion limit in OS6? That's pretty good news! Thanks for the heads up on 8TB drives.

Yes, with those upgrades, your Ultra6+ is a prime candidate for the unsupported use of OS 6. My upgraded Pro BE's are essentially the same as what you have except with only 2GB of ram on all but the one I use for media, and they run OS6 quite nicely. I did have the advantage of having an Ultra4 to try out OS6 on before taking the plunge on my daily use systems.
