Is there a way to automatically connect to ReadyNAS Ultra 2?

Hi everyone,

I received my NAS as a birthday gift so while I do not know the full benefits of it, I understand it's value and importance and am beginning to appreciate it more and more while learning to set everything up.

I am a Nursing Student at a major university with a Macbook Pro.

What I want to accomplish (that I have done partially so already) is basically, whenever I open up my laptop I want it to connect to my ReadyNAS (I have been using ReadyNAS Remote, by manually opening up the program, logging in, and going to shares->readyNAS), and log in to the drive. Is there a faster way? It is sometimes tedious and annoying to have to manually access everything especially if I open and close my laptop a lot.

The reason for this is that I have a program called "Synk Pro for Mac" which automatically monitors my files I specified for any changes and automatically sync's them to my ReadyNAS as sort of a backup - I know I have read a NAS is not a backup a million times but for my case it is. My files are important but in the rare chance I did lose them, it wouldn't be life-altering. I may plug in a usb hard drive to back them up again, but that is a little down the road as I don't have everything set up how I want anyways. So, if I could have it auto open readynas remote, log in, mount the share, etc. and then Synk Pro would take over with syncing everything real time, that would be ideal. The reason I use Synk Pro is that when I edit my word/powerpoint whatever I am doing files and save them, I like how it automatically recognizes a file has changed and has uploaded the new one.... Then I want to be able to access these files from any pc or mac without installing any software (in the rare case I forgot my computer or need to access it from someone elses computer).

At home I have an external monitor so I made a little docking station and just plug everything in (the ReadyNAS is plugged via cat6 cable into my 5th generation Apple Airport Extreme, and laptop is plugged in via cat6 cable to same Airport Extreme, when at home I have WiFI off). I think this setup is ideal.

Can anyone help me? Thank you!!

Just to clarify - your NAS is your backup. The comments here about Raid not being a substitute for backup are intended for people who are using the NAS for primary storage. You are using it for backup, so it doesn't really apply in your case.

I took a quick look at the Synk product - it appears to me that it does require ReadyNAS remote when you are using it over the internet. (That is because it's support for FTP is limited to read-only).

I'm not a Mac user, so I'm not sure how to auto-connect.
  • Do you just want the ReadyNAS share volume to appear on your desktop?

I assume that you will be on your own network when you are backing up to your ReadyNAS?

Anyway, I have a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and I have the ReadyNAS volume auto mount when I open the lid.

If this is what you are looking for, do the following:
Mount the ReadyNAS volume as normal
Once the volume can be accessed on the desktop, open System Preferences
In the Systems section, there is "Users & Groups"
The current user should be highlighted (your account)
Here, there are 2 tabs in the right section of the window (Password / Login Items)
Click on the Login Items tab
Drag the whole ReadyNAS volume icon on your desktop to the window where it says: "These items will open automatically when you log in"

The only caveat to the above is when you are not on your network, the laptop will still try to connect to the ReadyNAS volume. Eventually it will fail and say it cannot connect. Just click ignore and you are good to go.

    Hope that helps.

The way I understood the question, troy14 wants to launch ReadyNAS remote automatically - because the Mac is not always on the same network as the ultra.

Yep, that is exactly what I want to happen, thank you. I don't really care where it mounts to, I just would like it to be mounted so my program (Synk Pro for Mac) can automatically Sync in real time.

I have looked around but I haven't really found any solutions. Launching ReadyNAS remote isn't that big of a deal I suppose, but wish it could be automated.

Right Click on ReadyNAS Remote in the Dock, go to Options and check Open at Login. Then whenever you login ReadyNAS Remote will automatically be opened.
