Jbod and adding a disk

Hi folks. Currently have a Readynas 102 with a single disk in JBOD mode. When I add a
disk, will it treat it as a separate volume? Or will it span both disks?

  • In the GUI, does the Xraid icon on the right have a green stripe under it?
You want to make sure Xraid is OFF, before you add another disk otherwise it will use the disk for redundancy.
Once Xraid is off, add the disk and you should be given the option to create a new volume on the new disk. You could also choose to create a raid 1 volume or a raid 0 volume if you wanted to.

What is it that you want to achieve?

    Are you running 6.2.4?

Do you have a backup of the data on your existing volume?
  • Hi,

Thanks for getting back. I'm running 6.2.4. Xraid is currently green. I do have another copy of the data on the drive,
and multiple copies of the critical files.

Part of this is determining what size disk to add. I was considering a 4tb I saw on sale at fry's, but for redundancy, anything more than the size of the current 2tb disk
would be wasted. Tempting to gain space by making them independent.

    Definitely helpful. Thanks much!
  • Ok, if you add a disk now, it will be used for redundancy. Clicking on the Xraid icon will switch to where you will have the other options. This is one of the issues with 2 disk devices, redundancy will always mean losing half of your disk capacity. With 4 bay systems you have more options when it comes to expansion too.
  • I will definitely go with a four bay option in the future, but for the price this is a great little device. It was worth it for the media server aspect alone.

Am I correct in that if the second drive is larger in size than the first, the additional space will be ignored in redundancy mode?
  • Yes. I think in flexraid you may be able to use the space to create a non- redundant volume . Not sure though.

That would be nice, but I don't think you can.
