Mac formated External HD with iMovie database into Readynas USB Port

Hello, I am tired of having my external drive plugged into my mac 24/7 with the iMovie database since my internal HD is full and I can't upgrade the internal HD because its soldered to the board. My thought was to just take the external harddrive that is formated to MAC OS (journaled) and plugging it into my Readynas 102 so I can use it without having my 1 yr old trying to pull out the usb cord every 5 minutes. After plugging the drive into the nas I was able to see and view all the data from the drive but I can't run the iMovie database because it says its not the correct file format. From what I have been reading mean that even though I can see the file, I can't run it because once its shared over the network its viewed as a different format even though I can still see the video files the mac is requiring the i movie file to be a mac os (journaled) format.

Is there anyway around this? I am not wanting to share this drive with anything or anyone else so it doesnt matter if I can set or if possible to set it so only my macbook can read and view the drive in the correct format over the network. If possible, my goal would be when I leave my home to just unplug the drive and take it with me to edit movies offline.

For some reason I feel like I am asking too much trying to do what I am trying do here. Just frustrated because I didnt know imovie would hog up so much space on a non upgradeable drive then to put ONLY little tiny usb-c ports on the machine with cables hanging 2 inches strait out of the side. Then tying to use the LAPTOP as a laptop and you move wrong and the cable gets pulled out or bent.

Any solutions or help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm not a mac guy, but I do see a post that might help here: http://alex.zheng-dynasty.com/2013/10/imovie-10-network-drives/

The idea is to create a disk image on the NAS from your Mac, and then mount that disk image on the Mac.  That disk image should be on the NAS volume (e.g, the internal drives).  Then you'd copy the iMovie stuff to the disk image.

It's an old post, so maybe test it with a small library first.
