Most divx 5 videos not recognized
Hi,
I own a ReadyNas Ultra 2
I have RAIDiator 4.2.26 and installed latest ReadyDLNA Update Addon Package (1.1.2.3)
Under Services/Streaming Services, I have ReadyDLNA version shown v1.1.2
Most of my media files do stream fine on the Panasonic Viera TV (TX-P42STW60 Plasma TV)
A few of them don't and VLC Media Player shows that files concerned have one thing in common: MPEG-4 Video (DX50)
I can stream the same files from my PC using windows DLNA server
Any help or step by step how can I debug the issue
Example of file names (no unusual characters): 'S02E33 - Pig Swill Fly.avi'

- chopin70VirtuosoMainly mdgm as I hope he finds what's wrong with my divx videos
Also you about what we discussed and if you find something wrong about them :-) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOk. mdgm should be sleeping right now (even he needs some rest!). He'll probably be back on line in a few hours.
- xeltrosApprenticeYes I wonder how much time MDGM spends in this forum, one thing is for sure, that's a lot ;)
The Panasonic TV doesn't have a really good DLNA player. Mine (P50VT20E) reads MKV but not H264 for exemple, I recall reading MP4 though since I played some videos that I created on Imovie with it. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI will need have to more of a look at those videos perhaps this afternoon. Streaming it to VLC using OS6 worked fine for me. Need to test OS4 as well.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPlayed fine using VLC from a 4.2.x box too.
What's the CPU usage like when streaming these videos from a PC? You may be transcoding these video files. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe video files certainly play on their own in VLC.
Windows Media Player's "play to" feature does real-time transcoding as needed, and it would be useful to know if that is happening.
chopin70 - it would also be useful to know more precisely how they "don't play".
(a) do they show up on the TV menu?
(b) if so, are you getting an error message when you try to play them?
(c) Are you seeing/hearing anything on the TV when you play them?
If you can, perhaps also try playing one of the files directly on the TV using the TV's usb connection (or SD card if it has one).
mdgm - is there likely to be anything useful in the ReadyDLNA debug logs? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Not sure. Could be worth a look. - chopin70VirtuosoOk:
- The file streams perfectly when done from VLC or Windows Media Player to the Panasonic TV
- The file doesn't stream from the Netgear to the TV: "file format not supported"
- From an USB key plugged into the TV and played directly, it doesn't play either in fact: "file format not supported"
Does it mean the TV is the issue?
Why the Netgear doesn't stream it through DLNA while VLC and Media Player can ? As I understand, if the Netgear supports the video format, it should transcode and correctly stream it to the DLNA client! - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
No. ReadyDLNA does not transcode.chopin70 wrote: As I understand, if the Netgear supports the video format, it should transcode and correctly stream it to the DLNA client!
So if the TV doesn't support the audio and video codecs natively, then you can't play them. If you can track down the datasheet for your specific TV, perhaps check to see if it claims DIVX 5 support. Though in my experience those format lists are often incomplete - it might support divx 5 in .divx files, but not in .avi files for instance.
That last point is quite informative.chopin70 wrote: Ok:

-You can try installing plex on the ultra. Plex is a dlna server that will transcode. The ultra is apparently somewhat below the spec'd platform for plex - but your content is only SD video, so it might be able to handle it.
-Or we can talk off-line about batch converting your divx 5 to something else.
-There is a third option btw - which is get a media player that can play all your media, and use that instead (or in addition) to the TV. You can get players that can handle most formats for ~$100 or less. It is one more gadget though, and yet-another-remote-control (YARC). - chopin70Virtuoso

Thank you a lot
1- About my TV specs:Media Player Formats: AVCHD 3D/Progressive,SD-VIDEO/AVI/MKV/WMV/MP4/M4v/FLV/3GPP/VRO/VOB/TS/PS, MP3/AAC/WMA Pro/FLAC/WAV, JPEG/MPO
I see no divx here, neither xvid!
In fact, TV won't play any divx and I read that some Panasonic TV need to register the divx codec. However, I have no such menu in TV!
2- About Plex
--edit--
Seems my Ultra 2 is below specs and won't transcode

3- As a last solution, I'd be happy to transcode without too much loss in quality and to something that will play on my TV and the NAS
H264 is listed to be fine in the data sheets
